General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
The weekend parking at Sobey's costs $3 to 6pm and $3 after. It was mostly full of cars this past weekend afternoon.
A couple of blocks west,on the south side of Danforth there is the large Budapest Hungarian Restaurant for a filling meal. Great for a group of meat eaters.
Just north of the Danforth Go train station there is a community centre with a pool, exercise room and a ping pong table. Open from 7 am to 5pm, it costs around $5 for adults, $3 for kids.
Toronto Beaches Lions Club Easter Parade is on Queen St. Sunday April 20, 2pm-4pm. Great for kids to draw chalk on the road and collect candies.
Duckworth's Fish 'n Chips busiest day of the year is Good Friday, long lineups. But I don't know where to get hot cross buns.
There's a Toronto bike share station in the parking lot west of Sobeys. Can use the bike lane along the Danforth or can go north on Barrington Ave. to connect to the Taylor Creek park system of the Don Valley.
The Sobey's west lot also has a parking spot for rentals Enterprise CarShare and Communauto. Commuauto also often has a car parked on Harris Ave.
For advance voters there is an Elections Canada office on Danforth, east of Main.
And Chess'n Math's Strategy Games is only four subway stations away, 15 minutes.
REMINDER: One week before the regular registration period ends at 11:59pm on March 31st!
We currently have 51 players registered in the Closed and 31 in the Women's Closed and are at 57% capacity. With prices going up on April 1, we are anticipating many spots to be sold over the next 7 days, so be sure to get yours sooner rather than later!
A reminder that the our accommodation group rate with Town Inn Suites expires on March 16, for those who are coming from out of town and are thinking of playing.
We currently have 47 players registered in the Closed and 24 in the Women's Closed, and 103 players in total including the festival. We are at 43% capacity, so be sure to register as spots are filling up!
This site is very, very close to the Main subway station. Cross Main Street through the Stanley G. Grizzle Park and playground and it's the building to the left. It has two floors and used to be the East Toronto Masonic Temple. The Danforth GO train station is also close, a block south of Danforth.
The site has a small parking lot for around 20 cars. I don't know the policy of parking across the street in the two Sobey's parking lots, or Canadian Tire further east.
Next to the subway station is coffee and custard tarts, then on the corner the falafel shop I go to once a week. Further east is Duckworth's Fish n Chips, a Comedy Bar, Looking Glass escape room, Pizza Nova, and Bangla Town.
Next to the tournament hall is Kentucky Fried Chicken. A couple of blocks west are coffee, bars, pizza, and sushi places.
Further south on Main is a brew pub, coffee, roti, and an outdoor chess table in front of the library. The Main bus goes down to the Beach.
My only concern is I don't know if the site will hear the rumble of the subway trains underneath or the firetrucks along the Danforth.

The hall for the Closed is situated above ground level, and should be well clear of subway trains. It's also used as a theater and production space so sound insulation is also quite good re: firetrucks.

Just to point out that an Armageddon game doesn't work well in a 3 or more way tie. Should probably also clarify if the Olympiad bonus points are shared or impacted by this.
Thanks for your comment. The scenario regarding a three way tie on points has been covered in the full tournament regulations for the playoffs. Essentially, the players will be seeded by computer tiebreaks. 2 will play 3, and the winner will play 1.
We will discuss the Olympiad bonus points with Victor in the event of a tie.
You have a good point, David. I will talk to organizers and announce bonus rules in advance, before the start of the tournament. 2 years ago we dealt with different situation. 3 players (Noritsyn, Rodrigue-Lemieux and Sambuev) shared 1-3 place and got equal money each, but the winner (Nikolay) got 20 bonus points and the runner-up (Shawn) got 10 according to tie-breaks.
Please note that the venue was moved to the Don Arts Academy to accommodate more players.
Also, there will be a bonus $1,000 for the sole winner of the event on top of the guaranteed $1,000, thanks to a generous sponsor who whishes to remain anonymous.
For more clarity, the prize fund for the Canadian Closed Championship will be distributed as follows: The winner is guaranteed a $1,000 prize. If multiple players tie for first place, the total prize fund—including prizes for second and third place, if applicable—will be evenly distributed among them.
However, an additional $1,000 bonus is available if there is a sole winner. In the event of a tie for first place, an Armageddon game will determine the ultimate champion, who will receive this bonus on top of their share of the initial prize.

3. a. If only 1 Canadian Closed between previous Olympiad and the deadline.
- The winner gets the spot.
- 20 points bonus for runner-up
- 10 points bonus for third place
- 10 points penalty if a player did not play/withdrew
b. If 2 Canadian Closed (1 of them is Zonal) between previous Olympiad and the deadline

- 20 points for Zonal runner-up, 10 points for 3rd place
- 20 points for another Closed winner, 10 points for runner-up
- 10 points penalty if a player didn't play/withdrew from BOTH tournaments.
4. 5 points bonus for every year below 23. Only year of birth is taking into account. Example: IM A.Atanasov (2008) gets 25 bonus points for Olympiad - 2026 and 15 points for Olympiad - 2028.
Hi Victor,
Going through the description, it seems the Zonal/Closed winner typically gets the Olympiad spot.
What role do the points play ? i.e. how are they used to make any decision on selection ?
