Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.

2025 Ontario Open IM WIM and FIDE 2400 Above Free Entry
Since we have had success with fundraising (Ghent Automation), we have decided to offer free entry for:
IM, WIM, and anyone with a FIDE 2400 and above, with tournament participation announced by the end of April 20th, 2025. If anyone in this group registers after April 20, their entry fee will be $60, with no discounts for age/sex.

We have another update to announce. Due to multiple baseball tournaments on that same weekend, rooms at the playing site and elsewhere are hard to come by. We do now have an additional 12 rooms at the Best Western (the playing site).
This is first come, first serve, so they might not last long. Others may become available in the future, but there are no guarantees. The reduced room price is $139 + taxes.
To book, call 519-753-8651, mention the 2025 Ontario Open Chess tournament on May 17-19 and they will give you this reduced rate. NOTE: These rooms cannot be booked online, only by phone. If you try online, there are no rooms available because we have them blocked for the tournament.
We are actively trying to find other accommodations locally, but they are scarce.
More good news regarding accommodations. We have some rooms available at the downtown campus housing site detailed below. Please note if the kitchen is needed, you will need to supply cooking/eating utensils. Be sure to check when emailing what is and isn't available in the dorms.
Hi Rob. I have reserved 5-3 bedroom apartments from Saturday, May 17-Monday, May 19th. The apartments are located in Grand River Hall (171 Colborne Street). Each apartment contains 3 bedrooms, 2 washrooms, a kitchen (with fridge and stove only) and a living room. The rate is $180.00 per apartment/night, plus HST (or $60.00 per bedroom)
Additional information:
All beds are single and are supplied with a pillow, blanket, two sheets, two towels, soap, and a cup.
Laundry facilities are available in most residences.

re the post from Mar 12: We have 7 blocked rooms left at the Best Western with the special rate of $139 + taxes. As mentioned above, call 519-753-8651 and mention the Brantford Chess Club tournament May 17-19 for the block. These rooms cannot be booked online. We hope to get more rooms if/when they get released from other blocked events. These are first come first served, so if you are booking sooner is better than later.
Today we passed 60 entries. Our projected prize fund for 100 paid entries is approximately $9500. If we get to 150, the projected prize fund is nearly $13,000. The fee increase date is after end of day April 20, from $110 less discounts to $120 less discounts.
One last note for today:
For those that are new CFC members and have paid entry to our event, the CFC membership updates every Thursday. i.e. If you get a membership on a Friday, our website scrapes the CFC database to verify your information. As such, we might not be able to finalize your registration until the database updates next. Let us know if you encounter any difficulties registering.
