    The Patron Saint of Chess

    by ChessBase
3/20/2025 – In an historic moment for the global chess community, World Chess officially introduces a Patron Saint of Chess: bringing the game into a centuries-old tradition of sports and cultural patronage. St. Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century Spanish mystic, writer, and intellectual, is an apt choice for chess's first patron saint. One of the most influential figures of the Catholic Church, she was known for her deep strategic thinking, discipline, and ability to navigate complex intellectual and spiritual landscapes—qualities that also define the highest levels of chess.

For pagans: Caissa is the goddess of chess; originally she was painted as a Nymph, but then got promoted!

OK - but the article I saw was had a painting.......could it be that it was the implementation of the earlier poem?

What poem is the source of the "personhood' of an entity named "Caissa".

        I'll hunt down the painting.

"...the earliest published reference to Caissa as the goddess of chess comes from the 16th century poem, Scacchia Ludus, by Hieronymus Vida. The poem, in the original Latin or translated into English, describes a game between Apollo and Mercury." US Chess Centre

          I fully accept this.

But what about these paintings of Caissa?
