  • Found in a Thrift Store

It's always fun to find an old chess set. Here is a photo of a peg-in pocket chess set I recently purchased for $1.

It's quite a small set. The board itself is about 10cm x 10 cm, and is fashioned not from wood but something like upholstery fabric. The set was manufactured by John Samuels Co. and the set still contains a small pamphlet "How to Play Chess".

But what makes this find special is that it still has its original price sticker: "R.H. Macy & Co., Inc.". Just under that in very small type "New York" and the price $1.98.

Yes the thrift stores are worth checking out - every once in a while you hit a bargoon. It looks like you hit the jackpot with that set Gordon! Ive never had that luck with vintage chess sets or old chess books. But I did find a cedar chest for a great price recently and old first edition books (they didnt know what they had).
