My prize was $600, so above the entry fee paid, but the entry fee wasn't deducted from the amount on the T4A.

Getting back on topic:

1) Why are the Royal City Masters organizers adding HST to the cost? I've never seen that before and,

2) Why is the late fee $75, which is higher than the entry fee of most tournaments! In an ideal world, sure, I would have registered months ago. But it's not always easy to plan so far in advance with work schedules, family, and other life obligations interfering. $75 is a deal-breaker. There's also the cost of accommodation to consider, and I hadn't even looked into that.

If they are part of a registered business then they have to charge HST unless they have revenues under $30k or at least that used to be the rule when I was concerned with such things. The threshold for registering a non-youth tournament used to be $30k but that includes all revenue for the year. For a youth tournament, it used to be $50k. To qualify as a youth tournament 50% plus one of the participants had to be under the age of 18 (or perhaps 16 though I don't recall off the top of my head) which probably includes most tournaments these days. If we want our social programs we have to pay the taxes that support those programs

Tournament entry fees used to be $50 or $100 and you might get 100 players. These days most tournaments charge more and have to remit HST.

It would be up to you to itemize deductions and not the person preparing the T4A.

in regards to the $75 late fee, it is motivation, pain and simple. The sooner you make a commitment in advance, the better off you will be. As for the HST thing, I have no idea. Having to fill out forms to claim your prize money, ughh!

The $75 late fee, upgraded to $100 three days before the tournament, was motivation for me NOT to play. Lol. It is a pain alright, as you mentioned. Like I said, in a perfect world I would make a commitment a year in advance if possible, but life's not like that for the rank and file. No matter, I'm enjoying a relaxing weekend here in Toronto; swimming, and going camping at Pinery Provincial Park on Monday for a couple of nights.

Incorrect. Without taxpayer funding the Government of Canada can pay for any social programs it enacts because we can always print money to do that.

I want to say thank you to organizers of this tournament. As usual in Guelph events, they provided a solid organization and a friendly atmosphere.

Last time I played in Guelph 6 years ago, just before the pandemic. Still, I played in Guelph more than anywhere else in Canada.

I really enjoyed playing in the Royal City Masters this year. Some wild games, amazing storytelling sessions, and some interesting analysis sessions with vicarious kibitzing. The Royal City Masters is a marquee event on the Canadian chess calendar and I will be happy to see it continue next year. I have sent an email of appreciation to the mayor of Guelph and the president of the University of Guelph.
