  • Vlastimil Hort 1944-2025 RIP

https://www.chess.com/news/view/vlastimil-hort-obituary GM Vlastimil Hort is special for me because he did show much to promote the game and promote blindfold chess. A long and interesting life.

GM Hort wrote a 1981 book on Alekhine's Defense (with additional material on Owen's Defense and the Nimzowitsch Defense to 1.e4; both sections by GM Raymond Keene), which was the most comprehensive work to that juncture on the Alekhine's. The Alekhine's Defense sections were very thorough, and I have found the entire book very useful; I still consult it. I have just added this author information into the article about him on wikipedia.org.

GM Hort played board one for Czechoslovakia during an era when his country, with a strong team, was very competitive in the Olympiads, so he faced many world-class players in those biennial team events.

GM Hort played on board four for the World team against the USSR team, Belgrade 1970. He scored one win and three draws against GM Lev Polugaevsky; this was an exceptional performance.

GM Hort's extraordinary sportsmanship in his match with GM Boris Spassky, Candidates 1977, is without parallel in top-class chess competition. GM Spassky had fallen ill, and had already used up his allotted rest days. GM Hort used one of his own rest days to give GM Spassky more time to recover. GM Spassky went on to win the match.

Rest in Peace, GM Vlastimil Hort.

Hort played in the Canadian Open (Montreal) in 1974, and the Montreal 1979 GM event. After games from both events, he could often be found playing blitz at the (now defunct) Cafe En Passant.
