For any seniors and pre-seniors (age 50+) monitoring this thread: see this website for the 2025 Toronto Seniors Championship, Sept 20 to Nov 29 (one game per week).

As for the Inter-Generational Chess Challenge, I've downloaded Stockfish 17 to my pacemaker and so will be ready to take on any and all young whippersnappers on Aug 10!

      FIDE Categories (I believe):

      1. 50 y.o. - 64 y.o. = Veteran

      2. 65+ y.o. = Senior

Let me know if this is not correct.

But the GTCL (Which I think endorses this Toronto Seniors Championship) categorizes 50+ y.o. as "Senior".

Again, let me know if this is not correct.

Differing definitions of "Senior" makes things a bit confusing.

      Thx.

The 2025 Canadian Inter-Generational Chess Challenge

Click image for larger version Name:	Medicine.jpg Views:	0 Size:	9.4 KB ID:	243057

        The Challenge

GWWS(80+) is the team organizer. Besides its own 2 members playing, it can conscript non-member seniors (65+) to its team, Old Pharts, since conscripts are needed to complete its team.

In May, 2025, we issued a team challenge to Chess for Connection (April Zhong, Founder & President), a chess juniors organization, to a 12-board, 2-game CFC-rated match. They readily accepted!

We are building Our Team - one player at a time!

        Completed (Except for Back-Up)!

1.Unfortunately Rick Garel now has a family conflict, and has to withdraw from the team.......maybe next time.

        2. Fortunately, Bob Gillanders, 69 y.o., and Executive Director of the CFC, has now joined us to take the last open spot! Whoohoo!!

        3. We also do wish to have a player in our Back-Up Pool, in case some team member can't make it at the last minute. They have to be on site for the start of the match. But if they are not needed, they can leave or just watch.
But April has advised that she will provide a junior to play a 2-game match against our Back-Up player at the bottom of the team board, if the back-up is not used. It will be rated (Although not formally part of the team challenge match.).
So coming to the match will involve being guaranteed 2 games, whichever way the universe unfolds that noon-time.
If there is a senior out there who's willing to volunteer to be the Back-Up, just comment below, with an email address, and we'll contact you. But hurry......we have other invitations out......it is first come, first served.

        4. So our present team (By tentative board order/by rating) is:

        A. Old Pharts Team (12 players - by Board No./Rating - 25/8/1 )

Royal City Masters - Guelph (Currently being played)

Click image for larger version Name:	Medicine.jpg Views:	0 Size:	9.4 KB ID:	243057

At this tournament, there is a "Team Prize", with the same conditions as are usual at most Hart House weekend tournaments:

          1. 4 players
          2. Maximum of 2 from one section; 3 sections represented.
          3. First prize of $ 400, with 2nd and 3rd prizes.

GWWS(80+) decided to try to field a seniors team!

I (Bob A), 80 y.o., played from our group. We then had to conscript 3 other seniors to complete our team, Old Pharts.

Our first conscript was Undriadi Benggawan, of the Mississauga CC, 72 y.o.

Both Undriadi and I were in the U 1800 section.

So we approached one senior from the Crown section, but he declined.

We approached 3 seniors from the U 2200 section: 1 was not playing the full tournament, so we agreed he should not be on the team. One declined. One did not respond to our written inquiry.

We approached as well, a 5th senior, but then realized he was in the U 1800 section as well, and so was ineligible. Another 2 seniors we knew, were also in the U 1800 section, and so also ineligible.

Team registration had to be prior to the start of round 2..........if there were other eligible seniors in the field, neither Undriadi or I knew them (Unless there were some we didn't click over on).

We simply ran out of time, and seniors.

But, undaunted, GWWS(80+) will, in future, keep trying to get seniors teams into the draw!

We are building Our Team - one player at a time!

Now Incomplete (Also need a Back-Up)!

NASA - we have a situation!

            Situation

Unfortunately Eli Teram had a death in his family yesterday, and he must go out of country immediately.

Some invitations for a last minute replacement have now been sent out. So it is now first come, first served.

We do also need a back-up player to be on site in case another player can't show at the very last minute. If they are not needed, then there will be a junior provided to play a 2 game, rated match with the person, alongside the match tables (But it will not be a formal "team" game).

So we are issuing a general invitation to CFC Seniors (65+ y.o.) to fill both positions.

If you are interested, please post here or email me: bobarm111 at gmail dot com.

Similarly, if you know of a senior that might be interested, please draw their attention to this thread, and have them respond here or to me by email.

            Team

So our present team (By tentative board order/by rating) is:

            A. Old Pharts Team (11/12 players - by Board No./Rating - 25/8/8 )

Today was the day of this great and unique team match: Old Pharts vs Young Turks!

It was a great, fun, but competitive, 7 hrs.!!

In Rd. 1 we held the junior team to a draw... each team scored 5.5/11 points!!

But we sort of collapsed in Rd. 2: 8.5 pts. vs 2.5 pts. And we're not going to play the "old age" card on this one.....just got beat fair and square!

We three partners in this chess project, The Chess4Win organizing group (Mintao being the main contact), Chess for Connection (April spearheading) & GWWS(80+) (With me as rep.), all agreed it was a very successful and worthwhile project.

Personally, in Rd. 1, I held my young opponent to a draw...he is over 300 pts. higher rated!

Of course, as is my normal pattern, I blundered early in Rd. 2 -. So Vukan won: 1 1/2 vs 1/2.

But.........given the rating difference.....I think I'll pick up a couple of rating points.....of course it helps that Bob Gillanders, who rates the CFC tournaments, played on our team!!

I'm exhausted (Nothing to do with now being 80 y.o.)!

But a good time was had by all......thanks to all the helpers, arbiters, etc. that contributed to this most successful event.

                    Updated Flyer

                    2025/10/8

                    A. Mission Statement

To Encourage chess seniors, since they are aging, to keep playing, by seeing the merit in evolving their former competitive approach from the old

                    "Opponent is the Challenge"

to the now more appropriate approach:

                    "Personal Best is the Challenge"!

                    B. Our Goals

                    1. Keep all chess seniors playing (Until they no longer can! They should continue to pursue the passion they've enjoyed over so many years)!
                    2. Encourage each other to go against all known wisdom, and raise our ratings when seniors!
                    3. Mutual support, friendship & camaraderie.

                    4. Highlight, and promote, the contribution of Canadian chess seniors to Canadian chess.
                    5. Information sharing – info of interest, to seniors in particular.
                    6. Organize Super-Seniors (80+) teams (“Old Pharts”) for team tournaments. To fill out teams, we will conscript from Veterans up (FIDE: 50+ = Veterans; 65+ = Seniors). We will look at participation in the Ontario 2026 Greater Toronto Chess League Regular Annual Team Tournament; 2026 World Senior Team Chess Championship; the University of Toronto 2025 Hart House Open Tournaments (Which often have a “Team Prize”); etc.
                    7. Organize tournaments, including seniors only tournaments.

[Depending on member energy and interest]

                    C. Membership Conditions

                    1. 80 y.o. or older as of date of joining; must be fully paid up CFC member;
                    2. Membership is Canada-wide.
                    3. Will do something beyond what they are currently doing to try to raise their rating;
4.. Have played at least one rated (Regular/Standard) Tournament (CFC; FQE; FIDE) in the year prior to joining.
