  • Adding Engines to Chessbase 18

I just became aware of a new version of Stockfish as a result of an email from Chessable. I downloaded it (version 17.1) from the Stockfish website. I could not remember for the life of me how to add an engine. There didn't seem to be any workable option from the options and engine menu.

Jump to an internet search where someone posted a video and explained that you have to open a board window and then Create UCI Engine. And that's all there is to adding an engine. Hopefully I remember this in a year or two when I need to do it again. I closed Chessbase and opened it and there is the new engine available and ready to use.

Did you really need to restart Chessbase? It worked for me after adding it without a restart.

Do we really need a new version of Stockfish? Will there be any different recommended moves in analysis of our own games? Will it find a hidden brilliancy or play the endgame deeper? Does it have an opening book of current GM theory?

I probably didn't need to restart Chessbase. I usually do things in fits and starts and did not check on whether the engine was available before closing chessbase.

I often get asked to do investigations of possible cheating or in some cases to exonerate people of cheating after they have been accused of it. Having the latest version is useful for me in these investigations.

Also while I do not get to travel or play as much as before, I have been trying to keep up with developments in chess and have been pretty active in online chess training camps. I do not really like online play as much as in person play and the local tournaments tend to be fast time controls. Usually I play as a favour to the organizers. I was pleasantly surprised at a recent local rapid tournament where I got to play IM Tom O'Donnell. He won of course, though I made him work a bit. I missed a move that might have given me some winning chances near the end but though I was up a rook, Tom had two very advanced passed pawns which could not be stopped after I missed the best continuation.

In due course, I like to go over my losses especially and having the latest engine helps with that as well.
