No. Junior events other than national championships do not require CFC memberships. They do require a membership to play in regular events.

So Erik based on those numbers, if I am reading them correctly we have more members today than we have had at any time in our history which merely means that I had a false recall of the numbers during the Fischer boom.

I would be interested to understand how the numbers went from 2755 to 4686 between 1979 and 1980.

Yes, we have more players now than back in the post-Fischer era. But I don't know how many members in the 1996-2004 era which had increased activity .

Our population has expanded so I think the data from 1975 showing players per the overall Canadian population should be looked at for other years for a fairer comparison.

        year /# of players /per 10,000 /Canadian population (millions)

        1972 1,550 0.70 22.22
        1975 2,533 1.10 23.14
        1979 3,046 1.26 24.20
        1980 4,686 1.91 24.52
        1984 4,131 1.61 25.61
        1992 2.651 0.93 28.37

        2022 2,547 0.65 38.94
        2023 4,046 1.01 40.10
        2024 5,240 1.26 41.53
        2025 5,405 1.30 41.55

So, I can say that 2024 and 2025 are similar to 1979, but that 1980 and 1984 had higher percentages of Canadians participating.

The 1980 list had increases in all provinces including Quebec. The difference calculations for 1979 ad 1980:

Note from the 1980 stats in the July 1980 Chess Canada Echecs: This list includes 303 unrated, 62 with less than 3 games played, and 61 who did not fulfill the CFC membership requirement. The list includes all those active in events numbered 79- or 80-, plus all those who were members on April 1, 1980.

Note from August 1979 Chess Canada Echecs: Number of CFC members in the May-June mailing list plus participating members.
