  • A different kind of chess-related problem!

In the Toronto Star newspaper yesterday, there was a chess-related theme in the 'Word Sleuth' puzzle!

Many people are probably familiar with this type of puzzle; they appear in quite a few newspapers. A rectangular grid of letters is presented, along with a list of words to find within the grid. I find them fun and useful for eye-pattern recognition and workout, for a few minutes. On the same page are Sudoku, crosswords, and others; also fun and challenging.

'Star' readers yesterday were presented with 'The Royal Game' titled Word Sleuth, within a 15 x 11 grid, and asked to locate 15 chess-related words, along with an 'unlisted clue'. The words were: attack, block, capture, castle, checkmate, defend, en passant, grandmaster, king, knight, queen, rook, stalemate, strategy, tournament. The unlisted clue was 'chess foot soldier' (pawn). Not too difficult, but this is the first one I have seen with a chess theme!

Online there are a few chess-themed word searches. Around a dozen years ago I made a Canadian chess crossword puzzle for Bob Armstrong's Toronto Chess News and it somehow appeared on several online sites. Maybe I should make a new one with the newer GMs and Canadian champions. But there are no longer any printed chess newsletters.
