Emanuel Kot won the 2025 North American Youth Chess Championships - Open U18 Section with a score of 7.5 / 9, which I believe is a direct IM title. Emanuel was only the 12th highest rated player in the section, so this was a great result for him. Chess Results says he gained 138 rating points in the tournament, which will get him over the minimum rating requirement of 2200 for the direct IM title.

Thats a huge achievement! Congratulations Emanuel! I don't know Emanuel at all so I will have to look up his games. Where can I find them?

Emanuel lives 60 km north of Montreal in Rawdon Quebec. His family moved here from Poland 13 years ago. His last round game was winning but still tricky...lasted over 5 hours and I believe over 150 moves (Heidi Gay can correct me). We will be giving the game scores to Hugh Brodie this week so they will be in his database shortly.

Trophies were awarded to the top 5 in each section.

While the U.S. dominated the event taking home 45 of the 60 trophies ( that is a quick calculation on my part)

Canada did finish first in 5 of the 12 sections:

U8 Open was won by Karson Lu of British Columbia
U12 Girls was won by Michelle Zhang of Nova Scotia
U14 Open was won by Calix Marchand of Nova Scotia
U16 Girls was won by Hanxi Jiang of Ontario
U18 Open was won by Emanuel Kot of Quebec

An interesting note: The young lady, Stella Xin, of the U.S. who played up into the Open U10, won the section on tie-break

Also, because of the Air Canada strike, we lost a number of players including most of the Mexicans :(.

My last point is with regards to Nova Scotia - Chris Felix and the gang there have been doing an incredible job with monthly CMA rated tournaments for a few years now...and it is paying off...CONGRATS!

The event was organized by the Chess'n Math Association (CMA), Canada's National Scholastic Chess Organization. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on August 22, 2025!

We thank the Chess Federation of Canada for awarding this event to us on this special occasion!

CMA has organized this event in Canada 4 times:

Montreal in 2010 (the first year the event came to Canada...thanks to the help of Hal Bond. We were celebrating our 25th anniversary at the time.

Toronto in 2013 (we were celebrating our 20th year of operation in Toronto) The event was organized by our Regional coordinator Francis Rodrigues who is still with us 12 years later!

Kingston in 2019 (we set a participation record for the NAYCC)

Kingston in 2025 Celebrating our 40th anniversary! (Vadim Tsypin was the driving force behind the event with lots of help from Christian Lacasse and the rest of the gang).

With the last minute withdrawals, I am not sure we set a new record for attendance at this event.

Nothing to correct Larry, Emanuel Kot's last game was 159 moves (he won, but he only needed a draw to secure the title with better tiebreaks). 3 scoresheets!
