It is with great sadness that the Chess’n Math Association shares with you today the news of Gilbert Delisle's passing.
Gilbert has been with us since the very beginning and was an important presence in the lives of our students, sharing his passion for chess with them.
Whether in schools, at the Sunday Chess lessons or at the Saturday Chess Club, Gilbert was a constant and reassuring figure for thousands of young players.
He was often seen with a chess book in hand (sometimes in other languages) as he loved to continue perfecting his skills.
He taught players, now parents whose children also learned from Gilbert!
We have lost not only an experienced chess teacher but also a great friend.

A cute little story
Sunday, 20th November, 2016
Yesterday, a fellow brought his youngster to the chess club for youngsters in Montreal, which is organized by the Chess'n Math Association (CMA). Gilbert Delisle, who has been with the CMA from the very beginning (over 31 years) was approached by the fellow. Apparently, he had taken chess lessons with Gilbert when he was in grade 3! and now...he is bringing his kids to us for chess!
Gilbert Delisle was doing chess full-time in the 1970's. In fact when La Presse sponsored the game in Quebec, he was hired by Roger Lemelin (Publisher for La Presse at the time and a reasonable chess player) to teach chess in schools located in low income parts of the city. I don't think there is anyone in Canada today (or ever for that matter) who has been earning their living doing chess for close to 50 years!
Pretty amazing :)

Our sympathies go out to the family and the entire chess community.
The family will receive those who would like to pay their respects at the Magnus Poirier Funeral Complex (6825 Sherbrooke Street East).
