  • Atlantic September Chess Series

This September I am running a series of chess events in the Atlantic Provinces, the first of which- the St. John's September Chess Festival- is well under way. Like the last event hosted here, this Festival too is featuring a FIDE-Rated Open Championship

All of the details of the tournaments in the event can be seen in this link

The final rounds of the Open Championship will be played out tomorrow. The games from the top board are being streamed online and can be seen through the following links:

    Chess.com: https://www.chess.com/events/st-john...pionship/games

Stay tuned for more details about all of the events. I am looking forward to hosting more events to come as part of the series soon- in PEI and New Brunswick; and more generally, doing tons more organizing- domestically and abroad!

A few days after the St. John's September Chess Festival concluded, I had the pleasure of visiting the club run by Fred Mckim in Charlottetown at the Benevolent Irish Society and hosting the Charlottetown September Rapid Championship

It was an exciting tournament that featured both experienced competitors and novices to the game. In the end, the winners of the combined Open Section were: 1st place- Fred Mckim (finishing with a perfect score of 5/5!); and 2nd and 3rd places- a 2-way tie between Anthony Banks and Goldy Vu. The winners of the medals for top juniors were: 1st place (Gold)- Goldy Vu; 2nd place (Silver)- Allan Li; and 3rd place (Bronze)- Lucas Pham. The silver and bronze medal placings were determined by playoff tie-break

The Atlantic September Chess Series was an exciting (even if sometimes logistically-hectic!) tour of the Atlantic provinces. It was a pleasure to both see familiar faces, as well as meet new ones while promoting and supporting chess alongside those who do so regularly in their local and regional communities! I want to thank everyone who supported me along the way- it wouldn't have been the great series of events that it was without you!

I am looking forward to the 2025 Maritime Chess Festival starting later this week, and then heading abroad to pursue new opportunities shortly after!

For anyone still thinking about signing up for the Festival, don't miss the chance to participate in one of the marquee events nationally, hosted by Fred McKim. It has been- and undoubtedly again this year- will be a great event with something for all chess lovers!
