It was a good fight by Shiyam today in the tie-breakers for round 1. After 2 draws in the classical games the previous two days, the first 4 rapid games were also drawn. The third round of tie-breakers were at the 5+3 time control and in the first game Shiyam got behind on time and was defeated. In the second game, Shiyam sacrificed his queen for a rook and a knight to create an imbalance in an even middle game that he had to win, but the gamble didn't pay off.

Shiyam provided a strong resistance to a higher rated opponent (2618 versus 2399 = 219 points) and at some moment was very close to advance to the next round.

So far, only one Canadian player was able to pass a higher rated opponent in World Cup. GM Anton Kovalyov did it in 2015 as he won a march against R.Kasimdzhanov and in 2017 against V.Akobian and V.Anand.

And at a higher level, in a Candidates match, Kevin Spraggett (2580) defeated Andrei Sokolov (2595) in 1988.
