All the quarter final matches are worth watching but the most interesting may be Wei Yi - Erigaisi.

Sam Shankland, last American in the World Cup. Who would have predicted that?

Eight players from eight different countries in the quarter finals. Perfect distribution.

Absolutely. 2 of them from Uzbekistan.

Thanks for the correction Victor. First time Asia dominates. Four from Asia, one from Germany, one from Russia, one from the States and one from Peru.

"One from Peru" has changed his home federation to Mexico.

About Asia's domination. This time they have "just" 4 players in 1/4-final. Last time, in 2023 they had 5 (4 from India, 1 from Azerbaijan).

Another reward for doing well at the World Cup is improvement in rating. For example Aleksey Grebnev has reached an all time high of 2633 which is in the top 100 for the first time (actually 93rd). Martinez is another and his peak is now 2665 and he is poised to enter the top 50 for the first time. The biggest beneficiary is Yakubboev who has now reached 2701 and has gone over 2700 for the first time. Of course, Martinez and Yakubboev could still add to their rating gains with further success in the World Cup.

Yakubboev drew the second game against Donchenko to go to the semifinals. All other games were draws heading to tiebreaks.
