  • Shirov Coming February to Ottawa/Toronto

Alexei Shirov is planning a holiday in Ottawa this February. (Yes, he knows about our winters!) Although it is a personal trip, he has agreed to give two simultaneous exhibitions in Ontario. The exhibitions will be held at the RA Club in Ottawa (Thursday 11 February) and the Scarborough Chess Club (Thursday 18 February). He will also be giving two three-hour lectures in Ottawa on the weekend afternoons of 13-14 February. This will be a rare opportunity to play and study with one of the world’s top players.

Shirov probably needs no introduction to Canadian chess fans. He has headlined the Canadian Open in Edmonton in 2005 (tied first) and 2009 (tied third). In 1998, Shirov decisively defeated Kramnik in a match to determine the right to play Kasparov for the World Championship. In one of the great chess scandals of the 20th century, he was cheated of his prize and Kramnik was instead invited to play (and beat) Kasparov. Despite this setback, Shirov has nonetheless continued to play at a very high level, most notably this year in the Mtel Masters in Sofia (ahead of Carlsen, Topalov, Wang Yue, Dominguez and Ivanchuk). He is currently ranked in the top 20 in the world with a rating over 2700. He is the author of Fire on Board (one and two with three to come around year end) and numerous chess training videos on openings, endings and best games (all no doubt available through Strategy Games as well as the CFC portal to Amazon). Shirov is justly famous for his wicked attacking style and his polished endgames.

The event will be supported by the Chess Federation of Canada, the RA Chess Club, the Scarborough Chess Club and Strategico. The price per person will be $25 for each simul and $150 for the two-day lecture program. For further information, could interested chessplayers please contact me (for the Ottawa events) or to Maurice Smith (for the Scarborough event).

    Hi Gordon:

    Great news.

Do you know how many boards will be opened for the simuls in each location?

Do you know whether the club members of the respective clubs will have priority in getting the simul seats?

    Thanks.

    Bob

We have not worked out all the details but I would imagine members of the sponsoring clubs would be given priority. We will have to see what the interest level is before deciding the number of boards but space will be limited.

In view of the large number of expressions of interest, we will be taking registrations for the Ottawa events at next Thursday's RA Club session. Space will obviously be limited. The price again is $25 for the simul and $150 for two weekend afternoon lectures.

How about Scarborough's location? How many seats are going to be available? Does anybody know?
          :)

            Hi Caesar:

As far as I know, the executive have not started yet working out the details, except we have the date, Thursday, Feb. 18. We also know that SCC members will have priority in signing up for the simul ( I confirmed this with Maurice, SCC President, last night ).

Re: Shirov Coming February to Ottawa/Toronto

Shirov has just beaten Tomashevsky to go on to the next (fourth) round of the World Cup. He will play either Svidler or Naititsch.

Re: Shirov Coming February to Ottawa/Toronto

Peter Svidler meets Shirov in the fourth round. It took a miraculous escape from Naiditsch in the second game of the rapidplay: Naiditsch had an overwhelming position but ran into serious time trouble and Svidler pulled out a win, then went on to crush him in blitz.
According to MegaBase, Shirov and Svidler have met 27 times with Shirov up by +8 =15 -4 on the strength of an overwhelming superiority with White. But in the World Cup format, anything can happen.
Shirov is, of course, hoping to improve on his last World Cup outing when he lost in the final to Gata Kamsky (who this year was knocked out by Wesley So, but will still go on to the next stage of the world championship by virtue of his earlier match against Topalov!?!?).

Re: Shirov Coming February to Ottawa/Toronto

Shirov, as he is sometimes wont to do, self-destructed against Svidler in game 1 of Rd. 4, trying for a K-side attack.

So much for predictions based on form. Svidler won the first game with Black! when Shirov overpressed.

Re: Shirov Coming February to Ottawa/Toronto

Svidler went on to draw the second game to win the match and go on to Round Five. The game was a Ruy Lopez which petered out to an opposite Bishops ending with no winning chances for Black. Shirov goes home.

I will have a sign up sheet for both the Ottawa events---simul and lectures---at the RA Club this Thursday. Commitments now and payment in early January. $25 for the simul and $150 for the lecture. Both are filling up fast.
