Six out of seven games in the Challengers were decisive in round 4!

Remember what I wrote about Maurizzi giving his opponent the Irish center? Well that Irish center hamstrung his opponent. For the last half of the game his opponent only had the dark squares and had to watch helplessly as Maurizzi infiltrated on the white squares.

Max Warmerdam seemed confused in the last half of the game. He played the endgame terribly and ended up making it easy for Andy Woodward.

Miaoyi Lu is having a meltdown after a great start. She played the endgame terribly in her last game.

Rd 4 Abdusattarov had a straight forward win, winning a center pawn and simplifying down to a queen and pawn endgame.

Rd 4 Masters Hans Niemann had fun with his technique of queening the B pawn and winning.

Rd 4 Masters Sure enough Sindarov's tactical abilities were up to snuff and he found his way thru to checkmate.

And speaking of chess artists we have the legendary Ivanchuk, also playing in the Challengers and tied for first after three. At age almost 57 he continues to perform amazingly well, although as Im currently writing these words he has just spoiled his advantage against Erwin L'Ami with a careless rook move.
Update: Chucky's position went downhill fast - almost bewildering, but its hard to play against connected passed pawns especially with your king on the other side of the board.Last edited by Hans Jung; Tuesday, 20th January, 2026, 01:20 PM.
