Challengers Maurizzi revealed another strategical weapon - a rook sack on an outpost square a la Botvinnik and won a fine game.

Miaori Lu tried attacking Chucky but Chucky was having none of it. Instead he took over key squares and won. Chucky has his third win and is now only a point back of the leaders.

Andy Woodward had enough of sticks and a goose egg and agreed to a draw to stay in first place (actually tied with Maurizzi)

Max Warmerdam indulged in some crazy tactics trying to win but it petered out to a draw.

Erdogmus has proven he's the real deal. At the half in Tata Steel Masters he's plus one and tied for third and has gained 23 Fide points which puts him at 43rd in the world. 2700 soon!

The next two rounds are critical for Faustino Oro as he poised to get his final GM norm and become the youngest Grandmaster in the world.

Rd8 in the Masters I will have my eye on Abdusattarov - Giri and in the Challengers on Oro -Woodward, and , of course, the Chucky game.

Rd 8 Masters Abdusattarov around move 20 started making strange moves, four moves in a row, all on the white squares. Moves like Qd3 with no apparent purpose, and Kd1. Wonder what caught his eye, what was he planning? The computer is not impressed either, he's fortunate to be only -2. Lets see how it will play out.

Gukesh sure plays interesting chess. After a long forcing tactical sequence which Fedoseev initiated. Gukesh as a rook and a pawn for bishop and knight, but the knight is stuck on h1. Gukesh often plays with positional imbalances as compensation for material sacrificed and this is one of those positions.

Bluebaum continues to impress. His pieces are so well placed and he dominates the center.
