We are compiling a list of notable Canadians who, having entered their senior years, no longer play OTB regular rated tournaments. Many do still have their hands still in chess as administrators, organizers, playing online,etc.......but not OTB. We are not particularly wanting to go public with it. Seniors choose not to play for reasons, sometimes, other than deteriorating play due to aging. We are not criticizing any particular senior who has quit......we never know all the reasons. But we do use it in our private advocacy to show players inquiring the depth of the problem.

But the list is long.....and it points to a pattern.......and we are beginning to believe that frustration with oneself may be the main cause of ceasing to play for seniors.

We are already chatting informally with some on this list, lightly encouraging them to dip their toe back in the water....and see what it feels like. After all, it is the game they have been passionate about all their lives.......'til they went cold turkey on OTB regular rated tournaments. And we are clear that yes, psychologically, there is a hurdle to get over!

As anecdotal support: I had a conversation with FM Han Jung about a year ago, maybe less, on this very point. He told me that 20-30 years ago, his peer group in terms of age, and rating strength, likely numbered around 100 players across Canada. He asked how many did I think were still active, like he still is? I said I didn't know.

    He said:

    "Me"!!

    Yup......there's something going on here!

      Hi Hans:

Thanks for help on the timeline!

Our conversation is one of the factors that led me to create GWWS(80+) shortly after our discussion - I felt we senior players needed to do something to encourage those reaching the ripe old age of senior, not to quit playing!
