  • FIDE votes to lift sanctions against Russia and Belarus

    See this article:

    https://en.chessbase.com/post/fide-g...ia-and-belarus

It comes as no surprise to me that FIDE would cave in - especially since (I believe) they never really were on board by allowing people/teams to play using the FIDE flag...
    The Russian aggression (including clear war crimes in my opinion) in Ukraine is disgusting;
it is sad that an entire country has to be punished for the efforts of a madman but that is how the chips should fall. Of course I *know* many Russian chess players may be
opposed to the military aggression but naturally they need to avoid standing near a high floor window if they voice their opinion or their opposition to it.

    Gutless FIDE (again)

I was participating in this voting during General Assembly last Sunday. I voted against this proposal to allow Russian and Belorussian teams to participate in any FIDE events. The final score was 61-51 in favor of lifting restrictions, which was a bit surprising for me as I expected a larger margin, something like 70-40.

But still, Russia won another FIDE voting and now has almost no restrictions (expect maybe flag, it would be decided by FIDE Council later).

I will have to poke around and see if the voting was recorded (perhaps it is secret ballot?) - no idea. Might be interesting to see where the support comes from.
Thank you Victor for voting against this proposal - I believe that vote reflects what I hope many CFC members would agree with.

Regardless of FIDE's decision, I think Canada should refuse to play against Russia or Belarus.

Which would make us looking extremely poor and potentially ruin entire tournament like Olympiad.

The voting was a secret ballot. But it's easy to imagine who voted against lifting restrictions. Mostly Europeans + USA/Canada + Australia/New Zealand + Japan/Korea and a VERY few others.

I understand Ken's feeling ... in a different world it might be worth taking that sort of stand, but as Victor replied it might not have the desired effect and have many undesired side effects.
There are many international associations that are turning a blind eye to Russian aggression etc. and I guess there will always be opportunistic people everywhere who will not ever do the right thing.

I do have problems with the proposition:

                  "Sport should be apolitical."

I know the government is the perpetrator, not the athlete.

I know many of the athletes are against the actions of their governments.

I know that many athletes depend on government subsidies, and that their future can be altered by a government's unfavourable view of them. So they are effectively blackmailed into silence.

But governments are elected by the people (Sometimes a dicey proposition).

For example, is Trump not the consequence of a fair vote in a democracy, elected by a majority (I'm only talking about the democracy there in Nov., 2024).

If Trump, like Putin, in future, is indicted for war crimes (Against Venezuela for example), how should the USA be treated by civil societies........arrested if possible? Sanctions?

But in sport, will we all just turn a blind eye, and say the USA athletes are not to blame, and shouldn't suffer any detriment?

Is it really true that "sport" is the one area of human life that should be "apolitical"?

                    Sport & Politics

                    What about this idea:

If you, the people, want your athletes to compete, get your governments to change their policies that make them persona non grata on the world stage!

All the russian chess players that did not wish to be associated with ruzzian fascism moved out, and are playing for different countries (Khalifman being the only exception). None of the ones currently wishing to represent ruzzia are opposed to anything, they are all complicit. Its not putin that flies missiles, drones etc into Ukrainian homes. its ordinary citizens of ruzzia. About 2 million (out of 140million population) participated/still participating personally (1.3m is dead/incapable of murdering at this point), tens of millions working in manufacturing of war economy, the rest of the 140 million willingly pay taxes to sustain the war. This is not an effort of a mad man, this is an effort of a mad country. Just as mad as nazi Germany. Fun fact, In Germany, 800000 people got arrested for speaking out/actively opposing the regime. Thats one in a hundred people risking their life, ending up in concentration camps for having a sense of decency. In comparison, todays russia, the number of arrested is 20000. None of this is comparable to anything US has done/might do. Venezuela supports the ruzzians, I wont shed a tear if the unlikely happens. Its unfortunate most people in the west are not aware of the magnitude of daily hamas-level war crimes by ruzzians; alas, many that are aware don't care anyway - as the FIDE leadership demonstrate.

On topic, if I qualify for the Olympiad in 2026, I will seriously consider not playing, first time since the aborted Olympiad in 2020 belarus/moscow. Which is sad for me, because I like playing at Olympiads. Boycotting is pointless when the majority of the chess world wont even notice or care; I just don't want to be part of it, especially since I expect Ukraine to not play. Gens not una sumus.
