Tom O'Donnell was a very young 15 when he got in a few tournament games against Duncan Suttles. What a great start to one's tournament career!

I have zero recollection of the first game. I thought I only played GM Suttles once, other than in a simul. The second game I remember thinking right after it that castling was a big mistake. I still use this game with some students who auto-castle when they probably shouldn't.Originally posted by Hans Jung View PostTom O'Donnell was a very young 15 when he got in a few tournament games against Duncan Suttles. I didn't get to 2200 until I think 1985 or 86 and moved out of BC in 1988. By that point most of the really strong players (Suttles, Biyiasas, Macskasy, Taylor, Harper, Zuk, etc.) were either pretty much retired from playing, had moved elsewhere, or were getting pretty old.
I would say the strongest in that short period was either Dave Ross (FM at the time, later IM) or Lionel Joyner. I am certain Lionel would have easily been an IM at his peak. I didn't play him until he was in his late 50s and he was still very tough. He really loved chess and even then was keeping up with the theory. He definitely didn't play like an "old man".Last edited by Tom O'Donnell; Sunday, 28th December, 2025, 12:34 PM."Tom is a well known racist, and like most of them he won't admit it, possibly even to himself." - Ed Seedhouse, October 4, 2020.
