  • William Dandjinou: Canadian Olympian, keen chess player!!

The 2026 Winter Olympics are set to begin this week in northern Italy. One of Canada's brightest medal hopefuls is 24-year-old William Dandjinou, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, in short-track speed skating.

William was the subject of a wonderful article in the Toronto Star newspaper, Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, by Rosie Dimanno (pages S1 and S4).

From the article: "Of all things, Dandjinou draws an analogy between short-track skating and chess, his off-ice obsession."

As he explained: "'It's probably the closest thing in my life to short-track, except that you have time to think in chess. In short-track it's more instinct and reacting quickly, but it's similar because every action you take has a reaction, every move has a repercussion. Like in chess, you come in with a game plan, maybe the way you open your pawns, and then the way your opponent reacts will dictate your next move and you might have to change your game plan. Some people are more aggressive, some are more defensive.'"

Dandjinou has won seven of twelve solo events on the circuit this season so far!!
