Rinck, Las Noticias, 1926, Whie wins. This study isn't in Timman's 100 Endgame Studies You Must Know but it should be. Compare with the famous Reti problem in post 68 and 69 of this thread.

Solution to the Rinck problem in post 68 and 69 above.

      1.Kb8, Bd7

      2.Kc7, Be8

3.Kd8, Bf7 The only square. Note that the bishop will be captured by a discovered knight check or by the white bishop itself if it goes to any other square.

      4.Ke7, Bg8

      5.Kf8, Bh7

6.Kg7 Interesting coordination between the white pieces in chasing down the black bishop. The bishop and knight did not move but were poised to capture the black bishop if it moved within range. That is the end of the problem.

But wait. There is more thinking to be done (if you want) I discovered this in checking the final position (next post, next diagram)

What if Black now plays 6....f4?? (that's what comes from cheking all legal moves) Of course, 7.Kxh7, f3 and now if 8.Nd4+, Kf2 White could try to win the pawn by 8.Be4, but Ke3 a devastating king fork! So how do you win the pawn? A good exercise. Give it a try.

From the diagram above in post 78, after 6...f4 7.Kxh7, f3 Where is the best move for the knight?

Answer to post 79 above, where is the best move for the knight? Definitely head to the blockade square f1.

            For example: 8.Ng3+, Kg2 9.Nf1, Kh3 10.Kh6, Kh3 11.Kh5, Kg2 12.Kg4, Kf2 13.Kh3 (to avoid stalemate trys) 13...Kg1 14.Kg3, Kh1 15.Ne3, Kg1 16.Kf3 and capture the pawn and then proceed with bishop and knight checkmate.

There are many tactical tricks in these miniature endgame studies.

Timman illustrates with this: Timman 1994, Black to move. White wins, but how?

Answer to post 81. Black plays 1,,,,Ne3 Now, not 2.d6?, Bb8 and Black will round up the D-pawn.

However 2.Rc5 is the only move to win. 2...Bb6 3.Ba5 pin followed by pin. 3....Nxd5 incredible!! and all because of pins.

4.Kh1!!! and no matter how Black swings it, White will end up a rook.
