Rd 4 Esipenko vs Giri Is a Najdorf Sicilian. Esipenko played the Nf5 sacrifice which was declined, then he captured on g7 with the knight and Giri has run his king to c7. Sometimes Black finds a hidey hole for the king on b8 or a7. We have to thank Esipenko and Giri for playing such a potentially volatile line. (grin)

Rd 4 Sindarov vs Caruana - a sensational game - no matter how much verbal description I add I will be lacking superlatives. Throughout the game from the counterattacking Nd4 (stopping the black attacking knight, to the line opening d5 White had the initiative all the way and you could only watch in fascination (I did, I did) as the White pieces finally crashed through.

You could criticise the Black king placement, castling by hand, but that was not what this was about. No matter where, the black king would not be safe. Caruana was more a spectator than playing (or so it seemed). A truly brilliant game by Sindarov!

Sindarov now has 3.5 out of 4. The tournament enters another phase. Who is going to stop him or will he run away with the tournament. Maybe I'm too exuberant but the next rounds will tell.

The other round four games were well balanced draws.

In the women's a strong statement was made by Muzychuk in her play against Lahno. However the simple 28...Qxe3, exhanging queens, would stop the debacle.

Zhu took over the game against Deshmukh. With her two bishops, passed pawns and opponents weak squares it was just a matter of time.

There is no clear leader in the women's yet. Assaubayeva and Muzychuk are tied for the lead with 2.5 out of 4 in a tight field.
