Classical time control matches are becoming popular again. I love it! Here is the start of the Erdogmus - Topalov match. 14 yr old Erdogmus takes on Topalov!

Topalov is the perfect opponent for Erdogmus, and the games demonstrate that. Both are fearless and enjoy ultra-sharp positions. Topalov has a history of losing brilliant games, and this match adds to his collection.

The spring of !987 I travelled to the Black Sea coast along the famous Golden Sands beaches in Bulgaria to the town of Primorsko where I played in a Fide tournament, There I met a charismatic grandmaster Evgeni Ermenkov who had long chats with me between rounds. He introduced me to his "stable" (his words) of young talented players - all boys between 10 and 14 years of age and invited me to play them speed chess. In those days I considered speed chess my forte (I had put blindfold chess on the back burner during my travels) and so I was happy to take on the youngsters. One in particular I won't forget although at the time he didn't stand out. He had a pimply face, piercing eyes and was rakishly thin but at age 12 he already was a tough workout. I had trouble breaking even with him in our session and it didnt surprise me when a couple of years later he won the World under 14 tchampionship and got the IM title. It was Topalov. The rest is history.

27 years over 2700 has just come to an end for him and at the age of 51 he is one of the oldest to keep a 2700 rating and what a career! I will say this - that he always managed to get the attention of the press and I loved his style of play, chaotic positions, and chaotic games and tactical wizardry. I was privileged to meet him at the very beginning and I love how he bowed out at the end in a blaze of glory - playing a future headliner in an exciting match and dropping below 2700 at the same time. Its a grand exit from the world stage and a good time to retire.

Thanks for all the great chess Veselin, I was happy to have had a chance to play you even if it was only speed chess and our chat in St.Louis was also memorable to me. The book of the games of San Luis in 2005 is a treasure.
