  • National Capital Open: final registration days

Hi again, with a couple of days to go, we already have over 50 players registered!

Here are the remaining registration/payment options :

    1) Unless you FedEx or something, I would recommend against any more mail! ;)
I haven't checked the mailbox since Monday, but will check it by Friday 12noon.
Just after that, I will try to email anyone who said they had mailed their payment.

    2) I will be at the RA club on Thursday evening, accepting payments in cash, thanks.

    3) Onsite Friday evening, I plan to do first pairings by 645pm, to start games at 7pm.

P.S. Especially if you would like to play for free(!), as noted below, we could still really use a floater player rated over 2000. Check out the details below.

Refer further down in this post for lists of currently registered players. I expect to post the next list update after I take registrations at the RA club tonight.

    Yours in chess,

    Aris Marghetis
    - Organizer/TD, FIDE Arbiter
    - EOCA President, CFC Governor

    --------- previously posted information ---------

This weekend event is relatively similar to previous events by this Organizer, but there are a few changes, hopefully improvements! First of all, we are starting with 3 predefined sections, around the rating cutoffs of 2000 and 1600. In addition, one of our goals is to attain a total prize fund of at least $2K, with a first place of at least $500. Towards that end, some of the discounts and entry fees have been adjusted, either up or down $5-$10. Most players who register early enough as Amateurs, can still do so for as little as $30, and the full entry fee due onsite is actually less than it was for the previous EOCA Grand Prix tournament in Ottawa, the RA Fall Open in September. The only significant entry fee change is that now both GMs and IMs can enter for free!

Please note that we are still looking for at least 1 more floater player :
**** WE ESPECIALLY NEED SOMEONE RATED OVER 2000 ****
    - floater players help the TD guarantee no “forced byes”
    - floater players are paired and rated like all the players
    - floater players play for free, but under some conditions :
----- they play in 0 to 5 rounds, depending on byes by all the players
----- they can be phoned/texted in the hour before every single round
----- they have a current CFC membership by the time of first pairings
if you are interested in being a floater player for this event, please apply by email

--------- original event announcement --------- (since modified to include FIDE rating)

The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) organizes the EOCA Grand Prix, a series of weekend tournaments over the 2009-2010 chess season.

The next EOCA event in Ottawa will be the National Capital Open, on December 4th-6th. It will consist of 5 rounds, with flexible bye and Amateur options.

We will have 3 sections (rated CFC, Top Section also rated FIDE), class prizes every 200 rating points from 2200 to 1600, and several discount options.

Aris, it is a question about a Grand Prix standing list (http://www.eoca.org/PDF/GRPRIX2009-2010.pdf ):

Any reasons that there are only two sections?

and it seems the Top Section will be a very tough tournament. Good luck conducting it :)

I am not sure why the Grand prix standings appear that way, but I will check with Tim tonight if he is at the club. Or if Tim sees this post, he would reply himself. Thank you.

Yes, the Top Section is shaping up to be stronger than usual, looking forward to it! :)

I am still waiting for a design drawing from one of our volunteers. Will ask again tonight.
