  • 2026 Sardinia World Chess Festival

The 2026 Sardinia World Chess Festival is currently taking place in Orosei, Sardinia, Italy. The tournament debuted in 2024 and has quickly established itself as one of Italy's premier open events and has attracted a strong field of players to the 2026 event, including Ian Nepomniachtchi. Overall, there are 29 Grand Masters and 28 International Masters in the 160 player Over 2000 section.

Two Canadians from the recently selected Olympiad team are playing in the tournament. These are International Masters Anthony Atanasov and Sai Krishna. Neither player got off to a great start, but both are getting into a grove as the tournament progresses. Anthony has scored 4.5 points in his last 5 games, including a win over 2657 rated GM Ivan Saric today. Sai has scored 3 points in his last 4 games, including a draw against Ivan Saric and a victory over the tournament's 2024 Champion, 2602 rated GM Daniel Dahda. With today's wins, both players should get more challenging games in the days to come, which will be good experience for the 2026 Olympiad.

Two draws today by the Canadian Olympiad players against higher rated Grand Masters. Anthony Atanasov was up a pawn against 2594 rated GM Jacobson, but the players shuffled the pieces back and forth and a draw ensued. Sai Krishna was also up a pawn at the end of the game against GM Mustafa Yilmaz who is rated 2549. Both players are now at 5.5 points after 8 rounds. I believe Sai can get a GM norm if he beats a player rated over 2610 in the final round, so he needs a good pairing and a great result.

Two other Canadians are in the Over 2000 section. Both were victorious today and are having good tournaments. Zachary Saine and Max England will be packing some rating points in their luggage to bring home with them.

Thats quite the impressive scalp by Anthony Atanasov over GM Saric. GM Saric has been a top 100 player in the world for many years

The top two Canadians settled for uneventful draws, which isn't uncommon in the last round of a tournament, when there isn't much to fight for. Anthony played GM Ilya Smirin who is rated 2562 while Sai was paired down against 15 or 16 year old IM Nikolay Averin. Sai and Anthony both finished with 6 points and a tie for 15th place which is great in this field full of GMs. Sai gained 11 rating points during the tournament. Overall, this should be good experience for both players in preparation for the upcoming Olympiad.
