Rd 7 Sindarov vs Keymer Sindarov's feel for the initiative is incredible. Key moves 20.Bb3 and especially 25.g4!! and g5 and Keymer's position collapsed quickly. A nice finish was the last move Kh4 and in some lines threatening Kxh5 or Kg5 and Kg6 with checkmate!

Rd 7 Pragga made a gutsy decision to continue pressing an attack (when he could have concentrated more on defence and counterattack) and allowed Caruana a spectacular breakthrough. Caruana won in style.

Rd 7 Giri had a nice endgame shaping against Wesley So but went wrong somewhere. So draw.

Caruana, Keymer, Van Foreest tied for first, all with 4.5 out of 7. Giri with 4.

Rd 8 Caruana held a small edge throughout the game but Keymer defended staunchly. Draw.

Rd 8 Pragga invited a Grunfeld off MVL and got one, exchanged the Grunfeld bishop and won a pawn, some back and forth tussling, and is now nursing a pawn up in a queen and pawn endgame. Eventual draw.

Rd 8 Giri had an edge in the opening and early middlegame by controlling the E4 square and restraining White's pieces but then relaxed his grip and missed tactics on the long diagonal and is now dead lost. Lets see if Deac can break thru with his kingside attack.

Rd 8 Sindarov worked deadly magic with his knight behind enemy pawn lines (as in checkmate). The fans have Van Foreest to thank as he could have exchanged that knight earlier and settled for a dry draw. Definitely the most exciting game of the round.

Deac pulls it off - a beautiful checkmating attack with Giri's desperate passed pawn on the seventh. Congratulations to Deac for playing remarkably well the whole tournament and persevering for his first win!
