  • Commonwealth Chess Championship - 2026

The 2026 Commonwealth Chess Championship is wrapping up in Kalutara, Sri Lanka. The event consists of an Open tournament and numerous youth tournaments from U8 to U20. The only Canadian I could see in the various tournaments is Modith Aaroh Mutyalapati who is leading the Open Under 12 section with one round remaining. I am not familiar with this player and looking at his previous tournaments, it appears that he is based out of India. Still, it is great to see someone with a Canadian flag doing so well.

I am curious as to why there are no other Canadians playing in the Commonwealth tournament. My understanding is that Canada could send one official player in each of the tournaments. That is, one man, one woman, one Senior (Above-50), one Junior Girl (Under-20), one Junior Open (Under-20) player and one Open and girl each in under 8, 10,12, 14, 16 and 18 as official entrants and their boarding and lodging would be provided free in the official hotel.. I am surprised that only one Canadian accepted this offer, but I also see that there are no players from England in the tournaments either, so there must be some reason for the absences, but I don't know what it is. If anyone has any information, I would be glad to hear it.
