  • Canada has a World Champion!

Yes, Janak Awatramani of Vancouver B.C. with his partner Isaac Chiu, took first place at the World Bughouse Championship in Manila, Philippines from June 1-2, 2026. That was worth $25,000 U.S.!

Janak was a regular representative for his province at the Canadian Chess Challenge. He was Canadian champion in grades 2, 3, 5 and 11.

90 percent of the players were from the Philippines. It appears to have been sponsored by WR Chess (the "WR" is Wadim Rosenstein).
