Last night I went to a funeral parlor on St. Laurent in Montreal.
Gilles Carle, a very special human being, had died of Parkinsons disease. It was actually incredible! If ever I die LOL...let me go out this way :).
According to what I was told, only myself, Marc Cazelais and Yolande Beauvais had visited from the chess community...
Today in Quebec, there was a funeral of National importance at Eglise Notre Dame. I had the pleasure of spending some time with this very gifted individual in the 1970's, 80's and 90's. He is probably not well known in English Canada (the great divide) but you probably are aware of:
"The Great Chess Movie (original French title Jouer sa vie) is a 1982 Canadian film directed by Gilles Carle and Camille Coudari, starring Bobby Fischer, Viktor Korchnoi, Anatoly Karpov and Ljubomir Ljubojevic among other notable chess players.
The 80-minute documentary is produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB)."
I find it sad that this great man (who has done more than his part for chess in Canada) has left us and that the chess community almost ignored his passing....He was a Governor of the FQE and at least the FQE has put this on their site:

The last few years have been difficult ones for me. I have lost some very special people in my life...I guess that is what happens as you grow old LOL
I am not sure that chess will ever be what it was in the 70's and 80's...it attracted such incredible people in those days...I am happy to have had that experience...
Thank you Gilles, thank you Camille, thank you Leo, thank you Claude and thank you Roger Lemelin of La Presse! It was you who made my life in chess possible! With an important push by Bobby of course!
Sylvain Landry, who use to work for the CMA in Montreal, and is married to Martine, the daughter of Gilles, invited me last night. I went with Yolande Beauvais who owned the Chess Specialist from 1978 - 2000 and has worked with us at the CMA for almost 10 years. Gilles use to be a regular visitor to her club which was THE club in town for decades!
Today Sylvain works for RBC in the research department, has 2 youngsters, a beautiful wife and lives in St. Lambert, an affluent community on the southshore of Montreal. He has also written a number of books in French - 2 on chess as well as Sudoku (over 100,000 copies sold!) as well as other games!
He will be part of our 25th anniversary celebrations!
You know, the CMA has been a training ground for many...and I must admit I am proud of what our former staff was able to accomplish in other fields. ...over many years. During the next year, we will have a section on our site...where are they now?...which will talk about our former staff...and of course...former students of the CMA :)
If you know of anyone who has been a part of the CMA program, we have created a site on facebook called CMA Alumni. Please register as we will be providing updates during the next few months. Party time is Aug 20-22 2010 in Montreal!
BE THERE!
Sincerely,
