  • 2026 Canadian Senior Bridge Championship won by 3 Chess Players

The 2026 Canadian Senior Bridge Championship was won by team Findlay, composed of Ian Findlay of Toronto, Gordon Campbell of Calgary, Paul Janicki of Markham and Dan Bertrand of Calgary. Ian Findlay is a FM, who also won the 2018 Canadian Senior Chess Championship. Gordon Campbell won the 2024 Alberta Senior Championship and the English Junior Championship many years ago. Paul Janicki has written chess books on the English Opening, worked at Chess Canada in the early 70's, and worked at the Toronto YMCA chess club in the early 70's.

Our team won 127 - 110 vs Team Jacob in the final. It seems that chess players can become good bridge players, but I do not think it works the other way round!

Huge congratulations to all of the team! I remember Paul Janicki back in the day (70's for me) He was a legendary character with a vivacious young partner Angie Julian (later Angela Day) Both were extremely witty. During a game GM Walter Browne said to him: If you resign now I will give you a thorough analysis of your game and Paul said to him - if you resign now I will do a psychoanalysis of you. Paul was a strong chess master but he has been an exceptionally good bridge player for much longer, it seems.
Anyways hearty congratulations Ian. Now is the time for you to go and win the Canadian Seniors Chess Championship and have a rare dual honour.
