2026 US Championships in full swing

The US championships had their most blooody round yesterday. And leading the way was 16 year old GM Andy Woodward with an impressive dominating win over GM Caruana! in round 5. This result was the tournament changer. Many articles had already been written about GM Caruana on the way to his sixth title, now he is back in the pack.
GM Woodward with this fantastic win moves into a tie for first place with GM Wesley So. GM Awonder Liang and GM Jeffrey Xiong, also shakers and movers, are tied for third.

As a fan I've been watching Andy Woodwards play for more than two years now and he has got all the tools to go all the way.

Alice Lee is already dominating the women's with a score of 4.5 out of 5. She has shown impressive calculating skills and is turning into a calculating machine. This fan loves her strategic play and buildup of positions. Keep up the great play Alice! We are rooting for you.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/us-championships-2026-4 I have to include news of the previous round, round 4, as well. This round should be known as the round of "The Crazy Endgames" I was beside myself with excitement, glued to the board watching this unfold. The news articles dont make much of it but it was high value, cheap entertaiment, especially the amazing duel of GM Xiong and GM Liang and on the next board GM Caruana tricking GM Robson.

https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=3221003 The amazing endgame GM Xiong vs GM Liang. The crazy position is full blown by move 31. The black night offers itself seventeen times to a pawn!!! before Black resigns! GM Awonder Liang's play has been nothing short of impressive and noteworthy in this tournament so far!

https://en.chessbase.com/post/us-championships-2026-3 This set the scene for the next two rounds. GM Awonder Liang was the first to upset the field with two wins in the first two rounds before drawing GM Wesley So in round 3 and those two ended up tied for the lead after three rounds.

In the GM Woodward vs GM Caruana game, Black played 7...Qd6 in a Queen's Gambit position, and online commentary indicates this may be a new move. But Black seemed to fall just short of equality for the rest of the game, with White having a nagging pressure. Certainly, once White got in 44.Qe6!, Black was in deep trouble, and he eventually just lost a piece, as White was able to stroll his King into safety, away from Black's Queen harassment. Quite an impressive game for the rising 16-year-old American GM, and this result , as Hans remarked earlier, has really turned the tournament into a very close battle!

Rd 6 GM Liang won a nice two bishops and then bishop over knight endgame over GM Aronian and is now back on the winning track.

Rd 6 GM Caruana didnt have to trick anyone in this endgame as GM Shankland's thinking got muddled and he tricked himself.

At the half four way tie for first GM's Caruana, Liang, So and Woodward, with GM Xiong a half point back. What a close race!

In the womens Alice Lee was not herself. She played a series of bad moves and was lucky to survive to a lost endgame. Happens.
