  • Chess scenes from Google Streetview

Some chess scenes I found on my own. Does anyone have more to add?

    Dupont Circle, Washinton DC:

Marshall Chess Club, 10 W. 23rd St., New York

A quiet Washington Square, New York:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+Yo...,28.73,,3,4.34

    Market St., San Francisco:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?q=San+Fr...305.62,,2,7.86

Another view of Market St., San Francisco:

    Queen St. E., Toronto:

Lafontaine Park, Montreal - it looks like the fall or early spring - too cold for any chessplayers:

Berri Square, Montreal - still too cool for any action on the six giant boards:

The overhead view of Berri Square gives a better view - looks like a different time of year as well:

Merchant Park on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg, from the spring to September, has regular Friday tournaments. (It hardly ever rains.) Sorry, Hugh, I'm too lazy today to use the google maps.
Dogs will bark, but the caravan of chess moves on.

Is this the park? No sign of chess, however.

        Well done. That's the park.

Ok, chess locally now. There's "Coffee on the Moon" in Duncan which has a number of players.

Toronto, Dundas Square on Eaton Center side.
A person holding a chessboard flag (maybe just chessboard).

                And in Montreal....

                And in Ottawa....

Let's not forget Montreal's Cafe Pi on the shady side of the street:

Frank Marshall gave a 156-board simul in this Montreal building on Jan. 7, 1922:

No chess visible, however. Must have been early.

                    Pioneer Waterfront Plaza, Nanaimo, BC
This chess area is not used very much because you need to get the key to the pieces from the Wharfinger, which is a couple of hundred meters away to the SE along the waterfront.

                    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...00086&t=h&z=20

Nearby there used to be two more chess boards, much more accessible because you could get the pieces from the hot dog concessionaire. However, when the Civic Arena was demolished (don't ask me, this is Nanaimo!), chess boards were not part of the new park area. The google link, being at least a couple of years old, still shows the old chess boards:

Yes, there are pieces set up in front of Raul, the "Master" from Peru, who people pay to play. Too bad, the good chess players were removed from this tourist strip to Queen and Church where it's alot harder to make money hustling putzers.
