  • Corus Rd 2: Nakamura defeats van Wely

after van Wely reacted poorly to the Nd5 thematic sacrifice inthe Sicilian Najdorf, Nakamura unleashed his superb tactics to crush the former number 1 ranked Dutchman. van Wely's mentality rest on the principle that returning the sacrificed material in the hope of easing the attack. Instead of the losing 16. ..Be7, Black should try to keep the material by challenging Nakamura's sacrifice with 16....Bb7, creating the much needed queenside space for the king to run. Bb7 has the added use of defending c6 against Nc6. These 2 crucial factors spelled the difference between a draw and a defeat.

    Play could have gone 16....Bb7 17.Re1+ Kd8 18.Qe3 Qc8!! 19.Qe8+ Kc7 20.Qf7 Kb6 -black seems okay to me !!!

We wish Nakamura good luck in the next rounds. We still believe he is a world cup player at least up to round 4, if not more.

    Shirov strikes again

Great post Erwin. I believe we will see Nakamura continue to climb. This tournament is a great test for so many players - young and older!

Shirov posted another victory, this time grinding down the Cuban killer Fabiano Caruana. For the moment atleast he stand alone in first place.

Nakamura has an Impressive win against Short in round 3. He certainly is off to a fantastic start!

Shirov goes 3/3 ! catches Tiviakov in a mating net with black.

Carlsen looks like he is going to beat Van Wely

Anand looks to be in trouble against Dominguez.
