  • Philadelphia, 1936 - Maurice Fox

Maurice Fox played in the "3rd ACF Tournament" in Philadelphia, 1936. One source says there were preliminary sections before the final (which I assume is the crosstable posted below).

I have only one Fox game from this event (a win against Sidney Bernstein - just found now in the Feb. 1990 issue of EP - not yet in my database). Do any others exist?

Here is the crosstable (sorry about the lousy formatting; "D" = "draw"). Source: http://www.rogerpaige.me.uk/tables7.htm

    Ole Hellsten passes on that
"that it is the final cross-table, and that
Kashdan's game against Fox is given in 'Isaac Kashdan, American Grandmaster',
    p. 188, game 354.

Here is that game as given in the book:

        Hugh,
Chess Review August 1936 pg 177 has the schedule of events.

        Chess Review September 1936 pp 206 - 210

has story, results and a small picture of Fox vs Mugridge

        Fox scored +8 -1 =2 in a Qualifying Round.

The 1936 ACF event is perhaps better known as the U.S. Open (as opposed to the U.S. Championship, which was held in New York that year). It was formally renamed as the U.S. Open a while later (see wikipedia.org for a history of that event). There would have been preliminary qualifying rounds held there as well, to determine the top 12 players for the finals (which Fox made, putting up a decent showing), so there are more Fox games out there from that event. Perhaps the USCF (which organized the ACF events; it was called the American Chess Federation then, I believe), may have games in their files which haven't yet been put into databases.
