General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I recall back in the 70s that there used to be quite an active schedule of matches between, for example, Ottawa and Kingston. Undoubtedly, others had their own rivalries, for example, Edmonton v. Calgary.
Would there be any interest in resurrecting inter-city matches, using the resource of the internet?
I can envisage a league involving, say, Ottawa, Montreal, Scarborough, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, using the facilities of ICC or PlayChess.
My thinking is that this would stimulate interest in chess across Canada.
If there were enough interest, I would be pleased to help organize and arrange for a suitable prize or trophy for an annual event.
Just a thought.:)

A few years back, when I used to play in ICC, I considered becoming an online TD to help the monthly Actives continue. However, I was just too busy, mostly with work.
Now Gordon, if there is interest in your idea, I would be interested in TDing it on ICC.
The Calgary Chess Club and the Brantford Chess Club just finished a 4 board match over FICS. It went very well (except for the part where Calgary lost) with no problems. We are trying to arrange a match with Edmonton at this time and I hope to include other cities down the road.
We've been trying to arrange club matches in and around Ottawa lately, but it only worked out once so far, with U of Ottawa. See the website http://www.kanatachessclub.com for some pics from the event.
Anyway, if this is another way to accomplish the same thing, then hooray.
I think the USCL is a neat idea along those same lines (except for those awful, awful names).
I think that this is an interesting idea and the time is right for it. Recently Calgary and Brantford have done team matches (good work Tony!)
I grew up with a steady diet of team matches. As a junior I remember masters Peter Murray, Dan Surlan, Ted Durrant, Frank Pushkedra, and Milan Vukadinov providing leadership, cameraderie, and after game analysis (usually with a great meal where pieces grew sticky with dabs of different ethnic foods) After the early 80's when team chess across Ontario had all but died away, it was revived for a few years amongst clubs in London, Ontario with an annual team match down the 401 to Windsor and for all people involved it was a highlight. It would be another great opportunity for chessplayers to bond, share good games and analysis.

Montreal had great team events during the Fischer boom. It was fun visiting other clubs around the city - although snowstorms and lack of transportation sometimes caused problems. It was a challenge to draw up schedules agreeable to all teams.
During the early 1980's the Montreal team events were centralized in the CBC cafeteria (no more home/away visits) - but it was a great place, since it was open 24 hours a day, so food was always available. Too bad 9/11 etc. put an end to this place as a tournament site.

I could round up some chess players for a BC/Vancouver Team.
My questions/comments:
1. How many players per team?
2. What is the time control (did I see someone say, "Active" -- 30 mins)?
3. What rating levels are we looking at?
4. Would this be done on a monthly basis or ??
5. ICC sounds like a good place for this to happen.
I know this was first posted as a proposal, but if you could share your vision, perhaps discussion will be stimulated and refinements made, as appropriate.
Tony:
As you have obviously done this already with Brantford, can you give us guidance as to how to go about it.
Gordon
All we did was arrange for a 4 board match with Brantford. The average rating would not exceed 1800. Boards must be played in order of rating. Both team Captains agreed on a date and time of the match.
The technical aspect was easy. We used FICS since you don't need to purchase a membership. Each player opens a free account and is assigned a handle. We agreed that each team must play from one location and that the Captain at each end would oversee each board to ensure there was no cheating. Of course, being friends with everyone involved made this part very simple. Before each game began, we checked the settings of the interface to make sure you could not receive shouts from anyone except your opponent and that the settings were identical on each computer.
That is basically all we did, and it worked perfectly.
Nice idea Gordon. I was recently thinking about a post Jean Hebert made regarding our veteran masters vs. our upcoming young players. This would be an awesome match I would watch very closely! Any rivalry match like that could be a real draw, if you need any help big or small you can count on me.
"2.1.1 Three teams per National Federation in which a club team championship is organised with a minimum of 20 GMs. Two teams per National Federation if its club team championship had less that 20 GMs. One team in case the National Federation has no club team championship. All teams entering must be endorsed by the National Federation."
In the mid 90's Southern Ontario we had the Friendship Chess League
Brantford, Kitichener, Waterloo, London, Burford, missing one other club
We had decided on 4 board average of about 1800 or so
That was great fun

I remember the Friendship League very well as I was the guy who pushed to create it. It was a SWOCL initiative.
The teams were like you said Lee, except there was no Burford team. London fielded 2 teams, and I think the other team was either Georgetown or Guelph, can't remember, but I do have the records.
