  • Question on Mon Roi pgn

I've having some problems with Mon Roi pgn from their website. For example, take the game Moore-Yoos from the 4th round. Playing through the game on the mon roi game viewer looks OK, and if you get the score on the side of the game viewer you get:

    1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 d6 5.d3 Bg7 6.Rb1 a5 7.a3 f5 8.e3 Nf6 9.b4 axb4 10.axb4 O-O 11.Nge2 Ne7 12.O-O c6 13.b5 Be6 14.Qb3 g5 15.f4 gxf4 16.gxf4 Qe8 17.fxe5 dxe5 18.Ba3 Ng4 19.Rf3 e4 20.dxe4 Ne5 21.Rg3 Bxc4 22.Qb4 N7g6 23.bxc6 bxc6 24.exf5 Rxf5 25.Nd4 Rf7 26.Bc1 Rc8 27.Ne4 c5 28.Nxc5 Bf8 29.Nc6 Rxc6 30.Bxc6 Rf1
    0-1

which more or less corresponds to what I saw of the game. But if you click on the button for pgn you get:

    [Event "Grand Pacific Open 2010"]
    [Site "Victoria"]
    [Date "2010.04.04"]
    [Round "5"]
    [White "Moore, Harry"]
    [Black "Yoos, John"]
    [Result "0-1"]
    [WhiteELO "2264"]
    [WhiteTitle ""]
    [BlackELO "2444"]
    [BlackTitle "FM"]
    [Source "MonRoi"]

    1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.e5 g6 4.f4 d6 5.d4 Bg7 6.Nf3 a5 7.Be3 f5 8.Qd2 Nf6 9.Qf2 axb4 10.dxc5 O-O 11.Bxc5 Ne7 12.Bd3 c6 13.Qg3 Be6 14.Kf1 g5 15.Re1 gxf4 16.Qh4 Qe8 17.Qxe7 dxe5 18.Kf2 Ng4 19.Ne2 e4 20.Nc1 Ne5 21.Ke2 Bxc4 22.cxd3 N7g6 23.Nd2 bxc6 24.Ncb3 Rxf5 25.a3 Rf7 26.Rb1 Rc8 27.Rhc1 c5 28.Rxc8 Bf8 29.Rc1 Rxc6 30.Ra1 Rf1 31.Nd4 32.N2b3 33.Kd2 34.Na5 35.Ra2 36.Nb7 37.Rb2 38.Rxb4 39.Rxa4 40.Nd6 41.Ke3 42.Ra3 43.d4 44.Rxa6 45.Rxd6 46.Ra6 47.Kd3 48.Rb6 49.fxg5 50.h3 51.Ke3 52.Kf3 53.Kf2 0-1

which is basically garbage (doesn't even begin with the same first white move. ). The scoresheet button produces a similar result. Probably half to 2/3 of the games I have tried to download have problems like this. Anyone know what's going on?

Re: Question on Mon Roi pgn

I have no explanation for the game you mention, but I too have had problems with Monroi PGN in the past. Here is a game I tried to look at last summer:

[Event "Las Vegas International Chess Festival"]
    [Site "Las Vegas"]
    [Date "2009.06.07"]
    [Round "6"]
    [White "Villanueva, Delfin"]
    [Black "Tayar, Jonathan"]
    [Result "0-1"]
    [WhiteELO "2293"]
    [WhiteTitle ""]
    [BlackELO "2392"]
    [BlackTitle ""]
    [Source "MonRoi"]

    1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.D4 Nf6 4.Nc3 cxd4 5.Nxd4 a6 6.Be2 e5 7.Nb3 Be7 8.a4 Be6 9.O-O O-O 10.f4 Nbd7 11.Be3 Rc8 12.f5 Bc4 13.Bxc4 Rxc4 14.Qd3 Qc7 15.Kh1 Rc8 16.Bd2 b6 17.Rae1 Qb7 18.Re2 h6 19.Rfe1 Kh8 20.Rd1 Rb4 21.Rde1 Nc5 22.Nxc5 dxc5 23.Qh3 Rd8 24.g4 Nh7 25.Nd5 Rxe4 26.Rxe4 Qxd5 27.Qd3 Qc6 28.Qe2 Bh4 29.Kg1 Bxe1 30.Bxe1 Ng5 31.Re3 f6 32.h4 Nf7 33.Qc4 Nd6 34.Qxa6 Ra8 35.Qe2 Rxa4 36.b3 Rd4 37.c3 Re4 38.Qf3 c4 39.bxc4 Qxc4 40.Rxe4 Nxe4 41.Kh2 Qa2 42.Kg1 Qb1 43.Qe3 Qc2 44.Qf3 b5 45.Qe3 Kg8 46.Kf1 Kh7 47.Kg1 Nd6 48.Bf2 Qd1 49.Kh2 Qxg4 50.Qd3 Nxf5 51.Qxb5 Nxh4 0-1

In this case there is an obvious notational error, the use of the capital "D" on move 3. Chessbase does its best to continue interpreting the game by looking for the next legal move in the position, but the result is gibberish.

Re: Question on Mon Roi pgn

I also have had problems in the past with the odd Monroi PGN game (such as the capitalized "D"), and simply reconstructed it. This is the first time I've seen such a large number of games with errors. Assuming one player is using the Monroi and the other isn't, I usually compare the numbers of moves in the Monroi PGN file with that on the written scoresheet. If they match - I can assume that Monroi has the correct number of moves.

Try contacting Monroi, and report the problem.
