Several Canadians are involved in this event - notably Raja Panjwani started with two wins!

Note one of the top players - Jorge Sammour-Hasbun, listed as being from Palestine. He was formerly Jorge Zamora - a well-known American junior player in thr 1990's who disappeared from the chess scene for a few years.

    Some gossip about him: http://www.chesscircle.net/forums/ge...champ-yet.html

That's old--2006--gossip. Jorge has since won the ICC Dos Hermanas Blitz twice and has been interviewed on chess.fm. So there is no longer doubt (as expressed in that link) about who he is!

It's always interesting to see how a Blitz genius's skill translates into tournament chess. A decade ago it was the then-aging Genrikh Chepukaitis; today the still young Jorge.

There are still more posts per day at the old board.

All the Canadians I recognize are juniors - and doing well! Are all eight juniors?

Dale Haessel isn't a junior, and I don't believe Hugues Massé is either.

              1. Erenburg, 2. Gareev, 3. Vovsha.

Canadian players in general did well (gaining rating points, for example), especially Victor Kaminski (Alberta), whose 5.5-3.5 was (according to the Old Board) an IM norm! Congrats.

              5: Thavandiran, Hansen, Masse
              4.5: Panjwani, Haessel, Jiang
              2.5: Kazmaier
