    Hello everyone,

I would like to congratulate everyone who participated this year in OYCC last weekend. There was a lot of competitive chess played. Also I would like to thank all volunteers who helped organizing this year event. Congratulation to Leslie Armstrong and IA Patrick McDonald, who managed to make it a very smooth and enjoyable event. This was my first year volunteering and I had a pleasure TDing grade 12. Very well behaved group of guys lead by juniors Shyam Thavandiran and Aman Hambleton, who had to play a very fantastic
playoff match to decide a winner.

The only thing that needs to be improved is checking make sure each clock is working correctly before tournament starts. I would suggest labeling clocks that do not work correctly. This incident happened during a first playoff game between Aman and Shyam with delay time control. By move 12 where Shyam had 53 seconds left and started to play quickly and realized that delay did not work. I had to pause a clock and with confirmationof IA Patrick add 2 minutes to each side. I think this destructed Aman and after game resumed he made a mistake which lost him an exchange.

White on went on to win on move 70, after a lot of adventures. Aman took Shyam to the limit and almost pulled off a sudden death playoff. Game ended up the endgame where Aman down a piece managed to 4 pawns for it. Both players had 9 seconds left with delay time control. Aman got mated at the end with rock and knight. I liked Aman choice of Presudo-Benoni to play for a win against an opponent who desired a draw in this game. This was definitely best playoff game I saw in a while. I checked the theory on this line and move 4.a4 is given ?! and Qa5 ?! is considered dubious. Recommended line with advantage for black goes:

    4.a4?! Bb7! 5.e4 Nxe4 6. axb5 a6! 7. Ra4?! Nf6 8. Nc3? axb5 9. Rxa8 Bxa8 10.Bxb5 Nxd5 11. Nxd5 Bxd5 12. Qxd5 Qa5+ 13. Bd2 Qxb5

I would like to apologize to Liam Henry for not posting these games earlier.

    Mikhail,
I agree, everyone should be congratulated. The whole day went very well. I believe that everyone had great games and I know from my perspective as the Pairings "guy" it seemed to all go quite smoothly.

BUT ... don't get people confused ... last weekend was the Ontario CHESS CHALLENGE which is not the OYCC or Ontario Youth Chess Championships.

THE OYCC is still 3 weeks away ... and by the way, has already 52 pre-registered players!

Have a look at the site:
