Re: Canadian Open Early Bird Deadline Extended to May 8!

    Hi Bob;
I've noticed that some players are seniors but they are not indicated as such.
Will there be time to have these players corrected? How should they do it?

What's the definition of a senior for the purposes of this event? I figure a senior is someone 65 or over.

I don't consider 50 - 55 to be a senior. Many chess players haven't lost much from their game at that age. 60+ is more like it.

Gary, you should try some OTB chess again. After you get beat up by the kids a few times, you may consider 25+ as a senior. :D

              Trust me, I know. :o

Still, we shouldn't mistake weak players for seniors. When I turned 65 the government of Canada sent me a card.

It's not impossible that I could be beaten by kids.

When I was a junior, myself and another guy used to go to a coffee shop and hustle for nickles and dimes. That was worth a lot more then than it is now. There was one guy who used to like to play us and he was a pretty fair player. It was fast games and I can't recall if we played by clock. We probably did. He was probably in his mid 40's.

The guy showed up at an open event and finished pretty high. Maybe it was the Manitoba Open. Some years later I ran into him in Toronto. Of course, we were friends. Howard Rideout was his name.

Re: Canadian Open - Senior Reg. Corrections

                    Hi John:

                    Here is Brian Fiedler's reply:

" Yes - if seniors (or juniors or females for that matter!) have not been indicated as such on our listings then we will be happy to correct in advance of or even during the tournament.

For people that completed their entry form along with their payment they generally indicated as such but if they phoned in their entry it may have been missed. They can just let us know and we can correct. "

                      Hotel Location

The address given on the flyer for the Westin Harbour Castle is 1 Harbour Square.

                      Questions:

                      1. Is this off Queen's Quay at the waterfront, between Yonge and York Streets?
                      2. Can you get a streetcar to the hotel from Union Station? What is it called, or the car #?

This stuff is hard to tell from the map, and is not on the flyer.

                        Hi Bob,

I think Erik had put the details on the Monroi site (or a previous Chess Talk posting) but I may be wrong. You have the location exact and I think there is a street car that goes right up to the door but don’t know the #. Erik may be able to help.

                        Regards,

                        Brian

                          1. The Exhibition/Spadina streetcars that go to Harbourfront first stop is at Queen's Quay.

                          2. Go up the stairs on the east side (northbound streetcars) of the tunnel.

                          3. Go through the doors of the building on the North-West corner of Bay and Queen's Quay. Take the escalator up to the second floor. The playing hall is the North-west room.

People can also take the Spadina streetcar south and eastbound to Union Station and get off at the underground stop. Or can also take the Bay bus south to Queen's Quay. Or walk down from Union Station.

There is an overhead walkway joining the playing hall to the Hotel which surrrounds the Island Ferry dock.
