  • Will we get good results at the 2010 Olympiads?

    :(

I learn with sadness that Jean Hébert will not participate. If we cannot get decent funding and the team is brought to Siberia at the last minute, I agree with Jean that this we will be at a competitive disadvantage.

    - 6 players is a necessity
    - They need to be flied in a few days in advance somewhere in Europe for a team training
    - Payers should to be paid (as done by most countries)
    - Relying too much on ratings (with a 10 games played criteria) does not necessarily provide the best team. It would be preferable to have a selector using his judgment and not constrained by strict rules.

Providing ideas is easy. Getting funds is the challenge. Canada spends millions to help athletes for Olympics. The Canadian Sports Ministry should be approached and convinced to provide $100,000 every 2 years for the national and women teams. It is too late for 2010 but lets start discussing and acting for 2012.

6 players may be "a necessity" but FIDE only lets you use 5.

As for the funding ... good luck with that. I'm sure the CFC would be happy to accept your volunteering to proceed with that request.
