  • New-Tecumseth Chess Open, June 4th-6th

    Hi all,

I am running an open tournament on the first weekend of June at the Gibson Centre in Alliston, On. (about an hour north of Toronto, and 40 minutes south of Barrie). It's the first of its kind but we're expecting a good turnout since there's a huge number of talented juniors in the area.

$50 entry fee. $20 discounts for juniors, seniors, women, and members of the Alliston or Tottenham Chess Clubs. Free for titled players.

If there are any questions, my e-mail is geordie.derraugh@utoronto.ca

See tournament flyer below for more details

On my screen, the links are in yellow, almost invisible on a white background. Just so you know.

    Good luck with the event.

you might lose some potential players from the Guelph pro-am which is held at the same time. best of luck with the tournament.
University and Chess, a difficult mix.

Thanks John. Not sure why that is, it's blue on my screen.

Thanks Adam. Unfortunately June 4th to 6th was the only weekend the Gibson Centre had space available. Since they're giving us the space for free, I figured I should go along with it :D.

Also, it's come to my attention that there's a typo in the flyer. Registration is NOT from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Friday, it's from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Friday the 4th.

Other info to entice you: free parking, pizza lunch provided on Saturday, not to mention Alliston is the potato capital of Ontario.

Again, for more info contact me at geordie.derraugh@utoronto.ca

Re: New-Tecumseth Chess Open, June 4th-6th

The tournament is only a week away and registrations are coming in quickly now.

So far, Hans Jung and Alex Ferreira are our top players. A reminder that the tournament is FREE for titled players, that includes FM's, so be sure to keep that in mind. With a combination of sponsorship, getting the space for free, and quite a few juniors playing in the lower sections, the prize fund for the open section should be worthwhile.

I'll post a pre-registered list in a couple days and results will be posted in this thread as they happen.

          Please register by e-mail: geordie.derraugh@utoronto.ca

          Cheers,
          Geordie

You know this event's still not listed under the "Tournaments" link on the CFC site?

First I heard of this was in today's CFC Newsletter.
I just did a search for "Alliston" on the board to find this thread. I'd be surprised if other regular players are not as in-the-dark as I am.

                Pre-registered List

                John,

That was an oversight on my part, forgetting to submit it to cfc. A big one actually. I sent out mass emails and advertised on facebook, chesstalk, and locally in newspapers, posters etc.

We have 13 signed up right now. I'm expecting a few local juniors with whom I've spoken to sign up on site. Here is the preregistered list:

                FM Hans Jung 2264
                Alex Ferreira 2116
                Agastya Kalra 1988
                David Itkin 1965

                Sasha Chuchin 1468
                Jiaxin Liu 1442
                Andrew Hewson unr.
                Cameron Hodinka unr.

How about shopping/outlet malls, tourist spots, activities/events to visit by friends or family members who will come with the players?

Sounds like a great initiative Geordie - stick with it! The region is ripe for more action. Sorry we crossed up on the calendar but I know what it's like to have limited choices to dates. Best of luck with your event.

Thanks Hal. Good luck with yours as well. I'll be sure to book space months in advance to avoid doing the same thing next time.

The last chance to avoid the late fee was last night. I'm accepting registrations at the door, come by 5:30pm to ensure you get paired for the first round.

                            There are 18 preregistered:
