  • Calgary International Chess Classic Update!

    Greetings,

The Calgary International Chess Classic gets under way early next week. I have outlined the schedule in this post. Check it out.

GM Eugenio Torre will start things off next week with a simul on Tuesday, May 18th at the Calgary Chess Club. Only 25 boards will be available and I expect this simul to sell out quickly. To reserve your spot, email calchess@telus.net or visit the club tonight to sign up. The cost is $15 per player.

Thursday will see the start of the International section of the Calgary International. Come on out and watch the action live as the strongest tournament in Calgary's history begins! Spectators pay $2 per day to watch. If you are signed up to play in the Reserve section, then admission is free. Of course, you can watch some of the games live on the tournament website.

Thursday will also feature the Calgary Speed Chess Championship in the back room. Entry fee is $10. Only 16 players may play so reserve your spot soon! The tournament starts at 8 pm. It will be a 6 double round swiss.

Friday will feature rounds 3 and 4 of the International. The complete schedule is available on the website at http://www.albertachess.org/2010CICC/Schedule.html.

Saturday sees the start of the Calgary International Reserve section. This 6 round event is CFC and FIDE rated. If we fill the seats then the prize fund will be over $1,000. Door prizes will be given away each and every round. They include chess books, East Side Mario giftcards ($25 in value), Cineplex giftcard ($25 in value) and a beautiful desk clock courtesy of Ellert's Trophies. Registrations are picking up and space is limited to 32 players. You better register soon to reserve your spot!

The simul will cost $5 and will start by 7:15 pm. Marc will also provide a lecture after the simul and will discuss "Dynamics in Chess". For those of you who are not familiar with Marc, he is a very strong IM with at least one GM norm to his credit. I believe you will find Marc to be a very engaging speaker. For anyone who attends the lecture, pizza will be provided!

Register soon for as many events as you can! Email calchess@telus.net with your selection of events.

See you next week at the Calgary International Chess Classic!

Re: Calgary International Chess Classic Update!

The organizers of the 2010 Canadian Open have donated one entry to the Canadian Open this year in Toronto to the Calgary International Chess Classic. The current entry fee to the Canadian Open is $195 (deadline for entry to the Canadian Open is July 6th).

We will auction this entry at the Calgary International. The only stipulation is that you are entered in one of the events (main event, Calgary International Reserves, Calgary International Speed Championship, Torre Simul, Esserman Simul/Lecture) OR you are a spectator onsite.

Bids will start at $40! The winner of the bid will be announced after the Esserman simul, before the beginning of the lecture which will be held on Tuesday, May 25th.

If you are planning on attending the Canadian Open this year, this is a great opportunity to save a little cash while helping the Calgary International! Come on out and play or take in one of the side events.

Simply reply by email to register for any of the scheduled events at calchess@telus.net

See you at the Calgary Chess Club this week!
