Yesterday saw round one of the tournament end with no major surprises. The closest game to an upset would have been the draw between Panjwani and Me (not me). Otherwise things went as expected. Still, all the games were hard faught and hopefully this trend will continue for the rest of the tournament. Spectators came out in droves, standing room only for a while, almost had to close the doors. This presented some challenges with noise but we managed to contain it. We expect another full house for round 3 tonight as our usual crew of local players plus another batch of new and curious spectators flood the place again. In the back room we also ran a 12 player speed tournament, thanks to Bob Macfie for taking on this responsibility.
It was interesting speaking with the featured players before the start of round 1. Lawrence Day made the observation that 3 players in this tournament also participated at Lone Pine in 1979. Those players would have been Day, Fedorowicz and De Firmian. De Firmian might have earned his IM title at that event.
You can watch live coverage of round 2 on the website. Currently we are only running 2 DGT boards, we will have 3 boards for round 3 and hopefully another DGT board will arrive later tonight so that we can do the top 4 boards for the rest of the event. Go to the link and click on games to view. I will have the games from round 1 available in pgn to view or download when I get a chance today.

The local media continues to show up. CBC TV Calgary should have something on the air by 5 pm today Mountain time. It may also air at 6 pm. As well, it will be available on the CBC website at a later date, I will post a link when it's available. For some reason, they wanted to tie in chess with the NHL playoffs, so it might be a little goofy, depends on how they edit the piece. A well written press release can really make things happen.
Check out the website for up-to-the-minute results, standings and live games. I will eventually post some photos and reports when I get the chance. Kind of busy doing lots of other stuff so please be patient.
There is still a little room to join the Calgary International Reserves which starts Saturday, round 1 begins at 11 am. It will be played in the same room as the International section. Email calchess@telus.net to get on the list. Registration closes at 10:45 am on Saturday and all pre-registered players must show up by this time to get paired for the first round.
The week long festival will wind up this Tuesday when IM Marc Esserman gives both a lecture and a simul at the club. You can find details on price and times on the website, click on "Schedule" for details.
