  • R.I.P. Ernie Krzyzowski

Ernie has played in BC for many years.

He collapsed today during his 3rd round game at the Keres and later died in hospital.

This is a sad day... Ernie was a true role model. :-/

      Re: R.I.P. Ernie Krzyzowski

I remember Ernie from way back. He was an avid player, and I mean that he would get excited about every game. I suppose that (and an inability to pronounce Polish) was why some young players called him Crazy-ow-ski. The K at the beginning of his name was almost silent, then afterward it would go something like shrizh-OFF-ski, though maybe I got it wrong. Looks like I'm missing a syllable or at least a sound. His name was difficult, he was sometimes difficult--there was something of the dreamy and not always optimistic European philosopher in him--but he was a good guy.

He wasn't always in a wheelchair. I remember him being an occasional binge drunk (even at tournaments) and perhaps that had something to do with his accident. I don't remember him being drunk during the wheelchair years.

We don't know what lies beyond, but I hope he's with the chess angels now.

There are worse ways to go than at the chess board.

Here is a game from 40 years ago, the second and last one we played. He was looking good near the end, but I managed to squeak out a draw.
