General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Hi there, please excuse this short post, but I have to leave for work within 15 minutes, and I will be posting more completely later tonight or early tomorrow morning, including the list of players already registered, etc. As of this minute, we are at 64 players and $2700.
I am not playing at the RA chess club tonight, but if someone really wants to pay there tonight, Stijn has graciously offered to take your cash. He will then text me, and I could drop by the RA between 9pm and 10pm, on the way to pick up my son from his work shift.
The last-minute entry fees are now $90 for non-Amateur, and $60 for Amateur. RA chess club members deduct $5 from either. There are no other discounts still available to take.
The last registration option will be onsite on Friday evening. I hope to be onsite by 5pm, to set up, and I will do first pairings at 645pm sharp. The earlier you come to pay the better, and please feel free to email me beforehand to advise me that you intend to come and pay.
If you only want to start playing as of round 2, you still need to be paid up by the end of Friday evening, as I do the pairings for round 2 before I go home to sleep after round 1.
Bye for now, and look later for my reply to this post with the list of registered players.
Here is the latest list of registered players. The ratings have been updated as per the June 9th rating list, which has caused some players to change sections. Please confirm.
N.B. As this event occurs after the end of the University school year, travelling players can get great deals to stay in the residences of Carleton University, which is a convenient walking distance from the playing site. It is not right next door, but close enough, and includes free breakfasts!
( Regarding this year's Canadian Open in Toronto, I am looking forward to assisting Hal Bond as one of his arbiters. This will be about a month after the Eastern Ontario Open, for which I am the Organizer/TD. From my own personal viewpoint, I would like to somehow tie these events together, and get as many players as possible from Eastern Ontario to join the Canadian Open. So, I am offering a special discount for players at the Eastern Ontario Open, where you can register with me for the Canadian Open for only $185 (the current rate is $195) [without impact to the Eastern Ontario Open prize fund] !! )
Yours in chess,
Aris Marghetis, FIDE Arbiter
Organizer/TD, EOCA President
Please note that we are looking for up to 4 floater players :
- floater players help the TD guarantee no “forced byes”
- floater players are paired and rated like all the players
- floater players play for free, but under some conditions :
----- they play in 0 to 5 rounds, depending on byes by all the players
----- they can be phoned/texted in the hour before every single round
----- they have a current CFC membership by the time of first pairings
if you are interested in being a floater player for this event, please apply by email

--------- original event announcement ---------
The Eastern Ontario Chess Association (EOCA) organizes the EOCA Grand Prix, a series of weekend tournaments over the 2009-2010 chess season.
The next EOCA event in Ottawa will be the Eastern Ontario Open, on June 11th-13th. It will consist of 5 rounds, with flexible bye and discount options.
We are planning 4 sections (rated CFC, Top Section also rated FIDE), and prizes (2010 average > $2600) for every 200 rating points (U2400 to U1600).
For more details on this event, and a great webpage for all of the events in the 2009-2010 EOCA Grand Prix, please consider bookmarking this weblink: http://www.eoca.org/htm/tournaments_2009-2010.html
