General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Please note that this is not, repeat not, the website for the principal chess club in the Ottawa area, the RA Chess Club, whose site can be found at ottawarachessclub.pbworks.com
Because the OCC website expired, a lot of people may not have had access to the OCC message board, which did not expire along with the OCC website, at least not right away.
After the OCC message board expired, Mahlon soon revived it, as the topic of this thread indicates (the OCC website remains expired, however, unlike the OCC message board).
For those who did not save a direct link to the OCC message board (or who got rid of it at some point), here it is:

i miss ottawachessclub.com...my favourite memory of that was when i put javascript in the homepage to make the window shake (stolen from WWF site i believe) and people thought the site gave them a virus :)
After some long periods of inactivity, the revived OCC message board occasionally experiences a brief frenzy of activity.
Not too long ago, the old OCC msg board master Neil James Frarey put in a post, after some calls for him to run for CFC Prez again this year. He declined. The curious may wish to investigate the OCC msg board if they haven't visited in a while (or perhaps if they even might wish to ask NJF to reconsider ;)).

Reason: Grammar
Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Murphy's law, by Edward A. Murphy Jr., USAF, Aerospace Engineer
The OCC message board faded away more because of the slow death of the old version after months of waiting for a promised new OCC website. The OCC message board always had anonymous postings, yet was well used until the failure of the promised new website to arrive.
After Mahlon revived the OCC message board, most people didn't have a link to it saved, and they couldn't get to it via the then expired OCC website.
Nowadays one can get a link to the revived OCC message board by Googling for the OCC message board, but by now many OCC msg board posters from the old days have long since given up trying to find the OCC msg board, perhaps assuming it's long gone, I suspect. [edit: either that or they came back and found few posts on the revived msg board] [edit: another reason could be that NJF rarely posts anymore (at least under his own name) and no longer is involved in organizing; NJF was arguably the driving personality of the OCC msg board - a sort of cult of personality was built around him, one might say :)]
There still seems to be people who have a desire to post anonymously, as can be seen from time to time when chesstalk registration is circumvented and anonymous posters briefly make it into the chesstalk msg board.

The OCC board isn't worth reading with all the anonymous postings.
Today a game began on the OCC board between an anonymous player and all comers. Not sure what the rules are, I suppose they'll be made up as time goes on. :)
I guess even if the game's completed, it won't make it into CanBase, judging from your post alone.

A couple of people were asking me about the Ottawa Chess Club Message Board recently (it's not the RA club website, as has been noted). It's still running, although it's largely inactive for long periods still. For those interested, here's the link again (can still be found with a Google Search using keywords 'Ottawa Chess Club Message Board', too)):
