    Hi Vlad:

Congratulations on your increasing turnout - keep at it - Toronto needs a good strong regular blitz tournament - the predictions prize seems to have helped publicize it more.

Aso, we are getting some regulars in the 1600 - 1800 range, so a newcomer does not get overwhelmed as might be the case if all players were 2,000 plus.
And we have cash prizes for all ratings groups. No one has complained about the 3/1 points system but it doesn't seem to offer any advantage over the old 1 point 1/2 point system. But it is an interesting experiment.
Hopefully, we'll be drawing about 20 players soon. The owner and I are going shopping for extra tables and chairs on Tuesday. We already have four new digital clocks and I expect to get two more soon. Thanks to Larry for the discount on the price.

Hi Vlad...you are an icon of chess in Canada!

Are you in the Hall of Fame created by David Cohen...I certainly hope so...I will have to check :)

The problem in this chess-world is the turnover is enormous...and the newbies think they know everything :) ...I remember in the 70's getting your mag "Chess Canada". It was the highlight of my life!...and then the CFC decided...hey Vlad we can do this too and...we should be doing this...and the rest is history :(.

I have always said that the best people in chess, leave because they get discouraged.

At the present time we have some mega stars...hopefully we will keep them...people like Brian Fiedler and Marc Poulin come to mind in a nano second :)

...and then there are my favorites who have been around forever...and who I want in Montreal on Aug 22 :)

            Hi Larry,
Thanks for your kind words. I do believe live otb chess is on a rebound. In Toronto, we can thank Brien Fiedler and Alex Ferreira for that.
Speaking of chess at its peak in the early 70's Fischer era, I would like to locate a copy of the crosstable of the 1971 CNE Labour Day Open which should have appeared in the 1971 October issue of Chess Canada. If not that month then September or November. That was a truly historic event both in the participants memories and the fact that Boris Spassky, at the time the reigning World Champion, was one of the players.
Never before and probably never again will we see a reigning World Champion in a weekend swiss tournament. More likely we'll see one at the Saturday Blitz at Mom's Cafe.:D But don't hold your breath.:)

There is only a complete crosstable of the top 14 players; the other 233 players are listed with only their scores.

              Top results:

              6-0: Pal Benko, Robert Byrne.
              5.5-0.5: Boris Spassky, Laszlo Witt.
5-1: William Martz, Eugene Martinovsky, George Kuprejanov, Jacques Labelle, Olicio Gadia, Bruce Amos, Zvonko Vranesic, Slobodan (Bob) Krstic, Leo Williams, Art Bisguier.

              Other noteable players:

4.5: Donald Byrne, Ed Formanek, Lawrence Day, Geza Fuster, Irwin Lipnowski.
              4: Denis Allan, Ruth Cardoso.
              3.5: Walter Browne, Joe Smolij.
              3: Hugh Brodie, Larry Bevand.
2.5: "Armstrong, R" (is that you, Bob?).
              2: Bryon Nickoloff.

I would say 15 or 20 players in that event are still active in chess.

                Re: June 19 Blitz

                Thanks Hugh,

That sounds like what we would have published in Chess Canada. I would like a copy of the top 14 X-table and remaining scores. If you are coming to the Canadian Open, perhaps you could bring it or send it with someone who is. Else mail it to me.

                Many thanks, Vlad D.

                  Hi Hugh:

That's me - and believe it or not, I played IM Donald Byrne - got to the time control of move 40 I think it was, but was going to lose a P once play resumed. I decided that was enough to be down against someone of his calibre, and I resigned.

This is where you should have posted your non-apperence. But as it is, you were 12 hours too late.
