Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
It will be interesting to see if McGuinty is rewarded for the HST in the same manner Mulroney was rewarded for the GST.
In B.C. there's positively a revolt against their version of an HST. A petition, etc.
In Ontario most folks seem to be just taking it. Maybe it's because the provincial election is only a year away. Wait till the full force of it hits from July 1st onwards, when the price of things will go up even more than most people expect.
Probably McGuinty will lower the HST just before the election, after milking the taxpayer for all he can get in the time being. Then if the Liberals are somehow re-elected again, he'll raise taxes again in some way, if not by jacking the HST right back up.
Hudak and the PCs didn't make nearly as much of a stink as they should have. Nor do I expect they'll get rid of the HST or lower it much if they get in. However McGuinty has to go so he can't do more damage, besides taking his due punishment. Voters should at least try to discourage politicians from taxing the crap out of everyone with impunity.

We just had an earthquake in Ottawa; it hit the U. of O. about 1:50 pm. I heard a rumble that got louder and then actually could see the walls shutter for a second or two; then it stopped. I would guess a 4 or so?
Earlier tonight I posted the following on the Ottawa Chess Club message board (which still has light traffic from posters, in its revived version, so far):

I happened to be working on my next CFC Newsletter article, sitting in front of my computer.
When the shaking started this afternoon, a few minutes before 2pm, I stood up and tried to keep what was on my desk from falling down, in case it did. The shaking briefly reached a crescendo. My flashlight fell off my bookcase and its switch broke in the on position, so that I couldn't shut it off afterwards.
After the quake was over, I had a bit of a cramp in one leg from the shaking. I noticed that there were a number of nicknacks, pictures and books that had fallen elsewhere in my apartment. Some of the nicknacks broke, including one of two prized glass reindeer statues."
In case anyone was wondering, I wasn't really scared because:
a) I just know I'm not meant to go yet, and
b) I live on the 9th floor, so rationally I knew there wasn't much I could do.

When I got home there was rubble on my driveway. The top of my neigbours chimney fell off, bounced of his roof slope and the largest piece ended up on my roof overhang, cracking a concrete windowsill (missing a window by 6 inches). Glad nobody was on the driveway.
My kids had the afternoon off school; they said the quake started a fire in the school basement.
Out here on the west coast I think nature would do us a favour by giving us another similar quake. Eventually a much much much bigger one is going to happen yet, in spite of continually being reminded of these things by people who know it is going to happen, most of us are completely oblivious. We have an emergency preparedness process going on at our coop, but still the majority of our resident's don't come and aren't interested.
A decent little 5.5 shaker every ten years or so would be a handy reminder to wake folks up. We haven't had anything significant in Victoria since the seventies.
